In CFB, you can now fair catch inside the 25 on kickoffs

The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved altering football’s kickoff rules to allow the receiving team to fair catch the kick inside the 25-yard line and have it result in a touchback.
The Football Rules Committee made the proposal to continue efforts to increase the number of touchbacks during kickoffs since fewer injuries occur during kickoffs that result in touchbacks than on kickoffs that are returned. All other aspects of the kickoff play will remain the same.

You can, but now if you fair catch it within the 25 yard line it's considered a touchback

What's the point of kickoffs then?
Posted on 4/13/18 at 2:46 pm to GCTiger11
so basically they have done everything to eliminate trying to pin a team inside the 20. They might as well get rid of kickoffs entirely because that's clearly the direction they've been going the last 15 years

Time for kickers to start practicing squib kicks.
One rule I think should be changed is that if the ball bounces in and then goes out of bounds without being touched it shouldn't be a illegal kick out of bounds.

Onside kicks. At this point the kicking team should have to choose between a) we are onside kicking or b) the other team is getting it at the 25. It probably won’t be long before that’s the case

Yeah, I was thinking that, too, but there is literally no strategy in kickoffs now other than to kick it out of the endzone.

Time travellers report this highlight from the 2019 football season.

If it's such a big deal just rid of the kickoff. Teams don't need to waste practice time and scholarships on special teams if they're not going to matter.

rule is dumb, and i hate it... BUT dont think for a second 90% of these college kids are about to fair catch a kickoff thats not in the end zone. They want to make plays, and be a playmaker.

Yup, it sucks. I know player safety and blah blah, but kickoff coverage/returning is a huge part of the college game to me, even more so than the NFL.
There’s nothing that can set the tone better for a big game than pinning a returner with a big hit at the 15 or so on the opening kickoff and setting the crowd on fire, or likewise ripping off a big return. I’m afraid those moments will be gone soon.

Their coach may have a say in the matter. If a kid spends a game getting tackled at the 10 yard line when the coach expects him to fair catch it, then they'll get another kid that follows orders.

Its a stupid rule, IMO. Last season, KO return players that averaged 20-25 yds on returns were in the top 25 of the nation. Now if you catch a KO inside the 5-yd line, just call for a fair catch, and it's not marked where you're standing, its marked up at the 25-yd line. So you've just done the job that national leaders in KO returns do and didn't have to break a sweat doing it.
This would have been great for some of our KO return teams in recent years. We struggled to find effective returners, so we just told them to fair catch everything, and then get the **** off the field. This would have had us averaging starting possessions at the 25-yd line every time, which would've been pretty nice for us.....

Shouldn't they now move touchbacks back to the 20 yard line instead of the 25?
Posted on 4/13/18 at 4:11 pm to Black n Gold
Hell, make it the 15 if it's a fair catch.
This bringing it out to the 25 is too much. Next it'll be the 30 and from there, why play defense at all. Turn football into x drills.

That would give you less of an incentive to call fair catch. The whole goal of this is to discourage kickoff returns. My guess is if there aren’t enough fair catches they will move it to the 30.
Whether people agree or not it seems pretty obvious that eliminating non onside kick kickoffs is priority #1 for them.
I do think if they ever officially eliminate kickoffs it should go back to the 20.

Agree this makes things more fair.
