Soccer. Try out for a semi pro team, ball out, sign on with an MLS club, ball out, then go overseas on loan to a smaller club, ball out, sign with large club, ball out, retire.
I was thinking along these lines. Soccer players are moved so easily, and it is not difficult to go to MLS "tryouts".

You only have 5 YEARS. Why would you spend 4 years in college?

The Michael Clayton experience. One great NFL year, then awful.

Boxing. Very easy to get to the peak of the sport and insane money would flow your way. Golf is right there with it.

Salaries in soccer are less than you would think.
The best way to make money is to become a star at Man U, Barca, or Madrid and get a shite ton of endorsements. Then, demand a transfer to Anzhi in Russia where you can get 30 million plus a year.
The huge transfer fees you see in soccer go from club to club. That is not for the player's bank account.

I knew that, but I figured they would still get huge contracts. And, you are right. They get HUGE contracts in countries like Russia and in the Middle East.

He goes to Georgia, he doesn't understand the question.

You don't have to start with a semi-pro team. MLS teams hold open tryouts.
I'd explore third party ownership.
ETA: I'd maximize my cash by signing a huge contract prior to the expiration of my skills and Winston Bogarde my way to the bank.

Salaries in baseball are comparatively better than soccer. That is the main point. Baseball is probably the best team sport for this question.
Also, there is serious dough in f1.

Love all the people talking about money then suggesting other sports than golf, tiger was making over 100 mil a year in his prime, you would have at least 3 of your 5 years at that level, probably 4. Then you can milk the major endorsements for several more years "retire" and only go play your Thursday Friday rounds at the majors, mis the cut then get paid by espn on the weekends.
Eta: tiger didn't play a big schedule in his prime either, you could play every single event for 5 years and make a ton more cash.

I gotta think golf or tennis. Start smoking local competition, rise quickly to get invites to tournaments and then start just crushing people. You start winning majors and then the endorsements come in. In five years you could make a ton of money. The play won't be hard on your body and after you are done you can be an announcer.
With team sports it seems like the first contract isn't usually for that much money, and you would be hard-pressed to get two contracts.

Has any one said poker yet? Considered a sport. Play poker every day for 5 years and be loaded. But then again you could play football for 5 years, retire and go into broadcasting

MLB
1. It's my favorite sport
2. They make more money than any sport and can get a massive long term deal based on 5 years of GOAT numbers.

Baseball doesn't make more than golf or boxing.

Horse racing.
Win 5 straight triple crowns retire to being a stud site for the next great generation of horses.
Then be made into world class glue while the rest goes to a wonderful Mongolian BBQ

Tennis... Anyone?
If you're gonna be GOAT, it has to be a sport people watch in which you as a single player (not just on a team) can maintain everlasting glory. Tennis hasn't had a Grand Slam winner in mens singles since 1969.
The only problem with Golf is that you never have to really retire, so only having GOAT for five years isn't goning to hold you after you win the Grand Slam (although winning it would be an amazing accomplishment)
