If Matt Stafford were a black QB, he would have been out of a job long ago

Talk about a double standard.

Hard to deny that it doesn’t play out in the NFL, a place where the playing field is supposed to be level. It’s supposed to be a place we hope the rest of society can get to in a perfect world — where the best person for the job actually gets it. Yes, regardless of race.

It’s how this country can be 76.3 percent white while the NFL is 70 percent Black.

But there are times when you still have to take a closer look and wonder to yourself if the league is always fair and honest in evaluating players with the same skill and talent.

This is definitely one of those times.

A Black quarterback with the same stats as Matt Stafford through his first five years would be considered a bum, a bust. That QB would probably be out of a starting gig and be a seldom-used backup making little money.

Oh, wait a minute. That Black QB is Jameis Winston.

On the other hand, Stafford was allowed to keep his job, earning millions and millions of dollars while not winning one playoff game or division title for the Lions in his 12 seasons in Detroit.

Now, Stafford — who was shipped to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for Jared Goff — is viewed as a savior in La-La Land.

Stafford is officially the Teflon QB. Just listen to the gushing commentary from NFL analysts about how great he is. Often, it sounds like they are talking about Aaron Rodgers.

There have been more excuses made for why Stafford failed in Detroit than all the untimely interceptions he has thrown in his career.

In Tampa, Winston was simply discarded, tossed out with the trash.

But an honest look at both quarterbacks will tell you they were basically the same player through their first five seasons in the league.

Who the hell puts him on the same level as Rodgers? Most ratings I see on Stafford are around 8 to 14... Where Jameis was until the last season where he threw a billion interceptions.

Just a quick glance in Staffords third season he threw 41 TDs and 16 INTs with the most attempts in the league. This is fake news

It's Rob Parker. I had no idea he's writing for Deadspin now.

These stats are not super similar. Hell the completion percentage is massively off.

I thought for sure this would be that Shalize woman from Yahoo. Anyway, it's not the worst article ever. Rob should do more in depth analysis of the rosters each guy had.

Stafford had 1500 more yards, 4 more TDs, 4 fewer interceptions, 2 more wins, and 8.3% higher completion percentage when comparing each players first 5 years. Seems like Stafford is better than Winston. It's also not like Winston was replaced by some bum QB. I mean, he was replaced by the GOAT QB in Brady. What did they expect?

It's about trajectory, too. Stafford's worst season was his rookie year. Winston's worst season was his fifth year. That's what got Winston moved out of TB. Stafford's progress is what allowed him to gain the trust of management and start thriving at the position. It wasn't his whiteness.

Cumulative stats are also pretty dumb to use outside of comparing top flight players you need to distinguish against. Anyone with eyes can watch either of them play and see who is better.

What a dogshit article. Winston's Tampa teams were so much more talented than Stafford's Detroit teams.

Winston had more than 30 turnovers in his 5th year in the league.
