I think it would be fun and good extra side money.

I wonder what types of clinics and training they have for 1st timer refs. Obviously it’s much harder to see everything in real time compared to when I’m watching at home

I've thought about this myself. My son just finished his Sr. year playing and I won't be attending as a fan anymore. I thought it looks like fun and something on the side to do. My reluctance, is the fans give those guys some shite when they make a bad call and there ain't no replay.

The few football refs I’ve ever talked to say the hardest thing is to stay focused on “your zone” and not try to watch other parts of the play where more action might be.

I’ve thought about this as well, but then I remembered how much they get cussed out by coaches and the parents in the stands. I’d lose my cool and yell back and/or flip someone the finger.

I used to let this dwell on me until I realized I would never do anything close to as bad as the refs that fricked the Saints over against the Rams. Just get out there and do your best and everything is fine.

They do. Usually you'll start with subvarsity games on the field and working the clock on Friday nights

Depends on the state but there are usually day long classes or seminars that will give you certification. I've also seen that you can take tests online to do it. It's a pretty fun hobby and the money isn't bad at all.

I got a job refing intramural basketball in college. I honestly learned a lot during that, and it made my understanding of the game increase even if moreso than what it already was.

Idk what it all entails, but I would absolutely take up being a referee for either football or basketball as a side gig. I honestly may look up what it takes to get certified in GA over this next year before Fall 2021 hits.

The $ is great actually. Im set to make just under $1000 over the next 2 weeks doing soccer games pending any cancellations or anything like that. I doubt you can make that much with football usually only working 1-2 nights a week.

Obviously intramural leagues doesn't count for much. But in college, I took way too much joy in getting cursed at by a player, only to call a technical foul. Or if the fans (all 10 of them) were heckling, then I would purposely not call a foul for the team they were cheering on.

It's probably not good for the referees to hold vendettas

You lose money on travel. But it's exciting. Time consuming.

I do it and have fun. You probably will not see the field in a varsity game until year 3. First two years will be working clocks at varsity games and working JV games.

What’s the pay for working the clock? Or JV game? Or variety game? Assuming regular season game of course

I referee HS soccer in GA and started doing football for the first time last season. I primarily run the play or game clock; I have no desire to be an on-field official.

But I thoroughly enjoy it and I have done playoff games both seasons.

Regular season: $90 certified, $65 registered, $45 clock; plus travel which is about $10.

Playoffs: $105 certified, $75 registered, $55 clock; plus travel which could be a little more than above.

JV: $55

FYI: You cannot be certified until year 3. It takes an 85 our higher on the test, attending 70% or more of association meetings, and some field requirements.

Also, in the playoffs, you must be a certified official to work past the first round.

Yes, it is based on where your association is based out of and the schools you service. In the playoffs, it is the current IRS limit for mileage, 57.5 cents per mile, but it is limited to two cars.
