I can’t understand why coaches like Pat Shurmur get HC jobs

-sucked dick in Cleveland for 2 years
-journeyman OC after that
-boom, head coach after a few years hiatus
It’s not just him. It’s Hue Jackson, it’s Dirk Koetter, and a billion guys in the past

Is it just me or does Pat Shurmur bear a striking resemblance to Butch Jones? The two look like they could be brothers. Also are pretty comparable in terms of coaching ability.

Exactly who should be getting these jobs then? Head coaching is just as much about organization and coaching connections as scheming.. there aren’t many belichicks laying around and even he is the poster child for second chances.. while some are horrible choices, there really aren’t that many game changer head coaches available..

I remember I said this when Mike McCoy got the Chargers job after coaching Peyton Manning and a ridiculous offense. They just pick coordinators of good units and half the time the unit was good because it was loaded with talent.

In fairness, Hue Jackson is a different situation.
Jackson was the OC in Oakland and oversaw an offensive improvement. He was the head coach and led the team to an 8-8 record in a very turbulent season.
If you didn't pay attention to the 2011 season, you would think Hue Jackson deserved a second chance. If you did pay attention, you laughed out loud when he was hired by Cleveland.

True and there's always a new hot name or two each year who will get his first promotion to HC too. Jason Garrett unfortunately comes to mind
