How were Jimmy G and Wentz so overlooked by major college teams

What seem to be the two top young guys in the league and possibly generational-type QB's, both were 1-AA (FCS) level players who were obviously not offered any Div. 1 scholarships.
But why? Both have nfl size, lots of athleticism, and upper level arm talent (all things you think would jump off the screen/field for recruiters). They also led their respective schools deep into the playoffs so it's not like they sucked in college and became nfl flukes.
Just how do these types of players at the most important position that everybody is looking for get so overlooked.

Played at small high schools and probably didn't camp much.

some players develop more later in their career.
Kurt Warner is a great example.
Romo was passed up by many as well and will never get the respect he deserves

also these players has time to develop in the league
garropolo is in year 3 or 4 and Wentz showed flashes of greatness last year and made the jump this year.
players need to to adjust to the NFL, even if it's set up to be a "win now" league.
the coaching staff never lost faith in Wentz and the Patriots developed Jimmy very we'll, plus the 49ers didn't rush him onto the field.

Aaron Rodgers couldn't get a look out of high school, I think partly because he played in the boonies, and also because his raw measurements added up to "scrawny." I think he had one FCS offer, and complete rejection from all the FBS programs he sent his tape to. So he went to Butte College, and then it was a complete accident that Jeff Tedford saw him.
Tedford went to Butte to work out a tight end named Garrett Cross. Rodgers was throwing to Cross, and Tedford has said that as soon as he saw Rodgers throw, he knew he was going to the NFL. Tedford offered Rodgers a scholarship before he got back to Berkeley. If Tedford hadn't seen him, who knows, Rodgers still might have ended up at an FCS school.
There are lots of examples of NFLers who fell through the cracks out of high school. Some hadn't physically developed yet, some played in obscure areas, and some just didn't show their potential until they got older.
Look at Wentz and Goff. They entered the draft at the same time, but Wentz is two years older than Goff. That's two extra years of physical development. Goff was skinny at Cal. Part of the draft debate between them was that Wentz was seen by everyone as stronger and tougher (aside from being a better running threat). Well after a full year of professional training, no one has said a peep this year about Goff being frail. It was a dumb narrative anyway. Goff took an absolute beating while at Cal, and he never had a serious injury.

Hmmm college recruiting isn't an exact science?
I would have never thought of something so crazy.

Goff seems to be the player that most LSU fans envision Myles Brennan becoming. Time will tell.

Critics may have overlooked jimmy but I guarantee no woman has ever overlooked that package of handsomeness.

And surprisingly neither is the NFL draft, that’s why a part time starter at Michigan went in the 6th round has won 5 Super Bowls and a National Championship winning QB from Notre Dame went in the 3rd and won 4

I was #2 man in a small it dept.
I handled interviews.
I chose a guy with the education, verbal skills, and experience.
He was also the most handsome guy on earth.
My boss told me he would not hire him because he would remind him Every day how ugly he was.
Giggle. Patriots already had brady. They didnt hold looks against j g.
Looks like the all time best use of a 2nd round pick.

This guy reportedly didn't make his high school football team. He was the manager (water boy?). High school team made the playoffs and won their first game, but had both starting running backs get injured. In second round of playoffs a La Tech coach, looking at a different kid, saw the manager playing. Got a college scholarship, and played several years in the NFL.

From what I've read, they were just late bloomers. Wentz had a huge growth spurt and didn't play QB until his senior year in HS.
Garappolo didn't play QB until he was a junior (and only did cause someone else got hurt) and didn't put up any noteworthy stats in HS.

coaching staff never lost faith in Wentz
Well no shite, he almost lead a weak team to playoffs as a rookie. Was being mentioned as league MVP, and his team has best record in NFL prior to injury, Good job coaching staff keeping the faith.

Part of the reason was Wentz broke his hand his junior year, and when he returned to the lineup he became essentially a one-handed receiver, Wingenbach said. There wasn’t much quarterback tape on him until his senior season. But by the time Central Michigan was about to offer, Carson said he made up his mind. NDSU was the place. He no longer was he a 5-8, 125-pound freshman quarterback, but a full-scholarship recruit at an in-state FCS school.

Josh Allen has a similar story.

It's pretty amazing how many great players ended up playing for small colleges when you stop and think about it.
