I’m 6’10 and moderately athletic. Played ball in high school but that’s it. Looking at potentially trying to play overseas.

Why didn’t you play in college?

Didn’t think I had a chance at pros so I decided to just enjoy college instead. Probably dumb in hindsight but I’m not that skilled. Looking to get better doing this full time and making at least six figures.

Overseas is so broad. Euro league make six figures easy. Some of the lower leagues don’t. It really depends on where you wanted to go

Top level in Spain? Over six figures. Potentially 1M. Take a look at their rosters, you’ll see former NBA players there.
Third division in Austria? Probably not more than 1K a month
Having a European passport would help tremendously. Many leagues (not all though) limits the number of non European players you can have on a team. Those are valuable spots so if you don’t produce you will get cut quick.

How old are you now?

I don't think moderately athletic will cut it either. You need to start training like crazy and put in some serious work

European basketball is no joke. One of my friends in high school was a top 30 prospect. Top 5 point guard coming out of high school. Went on to play in the PAC-10. He was all-PAC-10 first team his senior year. He was the best player I’ve ever played with or against in high school, AAU, and college, and I’ve played against future NBA players.

He wasn’t drafted. He went and played overseas. He played in Germany, Kosovo, France, Italy, Poland, Turkey, etc. He couldn’t stick around. It’s legit. Now, I don’t know about some of the crappy leagues in other parts of the world like in Asia, but European professional basketball is no joke. Now, he was playing in the top leagues in those countries, but still.

I bet you could do okay in China. But you'd probably have to refine your skills a lot. Maybe look for an agency that connects U.S. players to international teams.

If you didn’t play college ball you don’t stand a chance. Those guys over there are highly skilled players who have never taken time off from their games.

A kid that played for me now plays professionally in Finland.

If you can marry a European girl you can get EU citizenship. Most leagues limit the number of foreigners, but if you have citizenship you have a better chance.

It's not so much about being one of the best in the world, because for all intents and purposes, there is a cap on foreign players per roster. These teams want to compete, but they also know that their bread and butter only comes through if there is some semblance of local attraction.

A lot of the rosters in Euro leagues have a kind of unwritten cap at 4 players from the US at most. I spent one night going down a rabbit hole and looking at various foreign basketball rosters. The only Americans I ever saw were, at the least, solid producers at top DI types of schools. Like, a solid starter in the ACC or a big-time player at a mid-major. That's a minimum.

High School teammate played in Australia he made 175k. The average player in the NBL makes 106k.

Some top leagues pay more, but limit the amount of Americans you can have on a team.

I have wondered this too. Didn't Marbury play in some Chinese league for a few years? I wonder how much he made over there?

This is about like Johnny Football saying he's gonna practice real hard and be a pro golfer

You have no idea how skilled, physical, talented even the lowest ranked professional ball players are.
