How do you think BYU will do in the new Big 12?

How do you think they’ll do? Me personally, I think they are one of the biggest winners in all of this realignment.
They now play from Florida up to West Virginia and down to Texas. Going to help their recruiting and people underestimate the size of the BYU brand. The Big12 obviously can’t replace Texas and OU but BYU is probably the best addition that the conference made. The others being added are much more regional than BYU.

I think there are certain factors that limit their recruiting potential no matter which conference they are in. But yes they are a much bigger brand than most realize.

Would one of these factors happen to be the LDS church? Very strict. Much more than the Catholic Church. It turns people off. They seem to be very set in their ways and resistant to change.

Thats the main one. Their state in general has some limitations even without the church.

BYU has an enormous national and international TV audience despite all of their idiotic baggage about when they can and can't play. The TV audience they bring to the table adds a lot more revenue to the Big 12. On the flip side the fan base has some issues which is why they were overlooked by the other conferences over and over again.
The football program will be competitive and the basketball team will be mid-to upper tier.
BYU by the way has a much larger fan base than Oklahoma. 4-5x the size from a fan base perspective which is why they had their own TV deal.

I don’t know if I’m buying that. The TV deal had as much to do with church related programs as it did sporting events. OU is a blue blood program with a long history.
If you said larger than OK St or Baylor id be buying that.

The state is strongly influenced by the church to this day. They cater to the church big time.

You're either Mormon or not Mormon.
And kids from Hawaii to New York go there if they're Momon.
Going to a different Conference doesn't increase the # of Mormons.
It doesn't matter

You really think only Mormons go to BYU. do only Catholics go to Notre dame?

No, but I would wager there are way more non-Catholics at ND than there are non-Mormons at BYU.

They may not be Mormon, but they are still expected to follow their strict code of conduct regardless.

This is the second time in this thread a comparison has been made between Catholics and Mormons. It’s such a terrible comparison.

But how “fanatical” is their fan base? Do they live and die by football, sell out stadiums, buy tons of licensed products, and donate tons of money like Oklahoma?
I mean, I’m a Pelicans fan, but not like I’m a Saints fan or LSU fan. I’d like to see them win but my life won’t end if they don’t.

They can be the most fanatical fanbase in the world but unless they start converting Big 12 country to LDS members their recruiting won't see a bit of change.

No kidding. Catholics aren't really religious fanatics. In fact, there is a reason for the term Cafeteria Catholics or Seasonal Catholics (the Christmas and Easter kind). Catholics have a reputation of being hard drinking and hard living too. Non-Catholics also have a long history of attending parochial elementary and high schools too. Basically, Catholic schools welcome anyone in.
Mormons have a completely different history

BYU has long had the largest average home attendance out West (Colorado, Idaho, Montana, California, Washington, Oregon, Arizona, New Mexico, Hawaii, and Alaska) than any other university. BYU against P5 programs averages over 2.2 million views per game. Its important to note that BYU's numbers have been suppressed because they weren't in a power conference but when they play a power 5 football program (even crappy ones) their views increased over 1.7 million.
BYU has 37k students in 2021
Oklahoma has 22k students in 2021.
BYU has a sizeable alumni advantage over the University of Oklahoma believe it or not.

Despite the denominational rivalry Catholics are at least part of Christianity. Mormons aren't.

BYU has been competitive over the years for a couple of reasons.
1) They were able to attract QBs and skill position players because of their wide open offense.
2) They filled their OL and DL with Pacific Islanders because of Mormon missionary work in those regions and communities.
Nearly every team now runs a version of the spread or HUNH, so the advantage they had in recruiting because of their unique offensive philosophy and track record of developing QBs is no longer an advantage.
They also no longer have a monopoly on Pacific Islanders. Every major school now goes out west in search of those players. Even their rival Utah has a roster full of Samoans and Tongans.
They’ve always had a wide recruiting footprint, but they’ve also relied heavy on California to fill the balance of their roster.
I worry that moving into the Big 12 will pull them further away from their California base.
