How do Panthers fans cope with being Panthers fans?

I was watching the Panthers/Giants game today, and there were some points, very early in the game mind you, where it seemed like it couldve been a Giants home game.
It had me reflecting on being a Panthers fan and a fan of professional sports in NC in general. NC is a state with a swelling population with metropolitan areas around Charlotte and Raleigh that have been at or near the top of the fastest growing areas in the country for the past couple decades or so. This is mostly due to an influx of transplants from the Northeast and it doesn't seem to be slowing down any time soon.
I've been to several Hurricanes games here when they play NorthEastern teams, most recently I attended a game in which they played the New York Rangers. Id say AT LEAST half of the crowd were rangers supporters. It was incredibly disheartening as someone with a mild interest in the sport, yet wanting to enjoy the game and atmosphere, to view it in an environment where I didn't even really have the camaraderie of sitting in a packed house of fans rooting for the same team as I. When I moved to Raleigh, I was excited to become a fan of the NHL. Growing up in Louisiana I attended a few ice gators games and that was the extent of my hockey experience. I still have never ice skated before. But going to a game that is a virtual away game in your home arena is just depressing. It really makes me disinterested in attending another, at least against a team that will have more away fans than home fans.
The point is, I realized today that the Panthers have the same problem, albeit likely to a lesser extent since the Panthers franchise is much more established here than the Canes. But it still made me consider how depressing it would be to attend a Panthers games against teams like the Steelers, Patriots, or Giants where there would be a large contingent of fans. Away fans are not something I want to encounter at my home venue. Part of what makes the superdome great is the unity amongst so many inside the dome. The place gets rocking and it is a great party. To me there is a stark contrast between that of a Panthers home game and a Saints home game. Granted this is likely not entirely due to the aforementioned reasons, but it definitely plays a part.
I suppose many Panthers fans that do not live in Charlotte or attend games may not encounter this issue to this extent. But I wonder how terrible it must be to be an avid Panthers, Canes, Bobcats fan. Id probably find a reason to root for some other franchise.

I always thought the Panthers had a pretty good fan base. Didn't know they struggled with that.
Side note, Carolina will probably be my road trip next year, so I'm looking forward to it. I've heard great things about the city.

I'm sure in Charlotte they have a stronger fan base, but in my time here I've seen a stronger presence of Steelers fans than Panthers fans.

That's crazy. Never would've guessed that.

When I went to Clemson a buddy of mine and I from Louisiana went to every Saints game they played against the Panthers.
It was awesome. There were always tons of Saints fans, and I find that no one is really a DIEHARD Panther fan so they never gave you shite or ripped on you like if you're playing in Chicago or Philly (kill me now).
It was a great time every time.

Well said and an interesting question. You may have stumbled upon the one of the first origins of what some call "bandwagoning". Maybe the apathy just sucks them dry. As a Hattiesburg resident for 4 years, I can say that the Southern Miss fanbase has encountered the same problem.

Cam newton put on a clinic
Why are they so bad? I reckon if cam was on a decent team, he'd be a top QB

Canes games were legit, you're a liar!

North Carolina used to be redskins country and for the most part still is, when ever they play its 50/50 easy.
The TV market before the panthers came was basically redskins and steelers both have massive amounts of fans there.

I think it's a combination of things. The main thing is, like the OP mentioned, this area is full of transplants who came to Charlotte for a variety of business reasons, as well as people who came to the Research Triangle as it started to boom. A lot of those transplants were from the northeast, which is why you see so many Giants, Patriots, Rangers, Sabres, and Knicks fans in the Carolinas.
All of those residents had their own rooting interests when they moved here, and they're not changing to the Panthers or Canes, unfortunately. Even people on this thread have talked about living in the Carolinas and going to root for another team...that's how it is. And I understand it - if I moved to New York I would continue to root for the Panthers, I wouldn't automatically switch to the Giants or Jets.
Secondly, the Panthers have been anywhere between mediocre and completely abysmal for the majority of their existence. The Bobcats have been a joke since they started. The Canes have been competitive, but hockey isn't a "southern thing" so the fanbase isn't there yet. When the Panthers were going to the Super Bowl in 2003, the stadium was rocking with Panther fans. We outnumbered the Cowboy fans by a great deal because Charlotte has a lot of bandwagon fans (problem #3). It was an amazing environment. But now, since we suck pretty consistently, the Cowboy fans would outnumber the Panther fans in a regular season game. Panther fans aren't diehard, and will sell their tickets to opposing fans just to make money.
The final reason is the teams are just so young. They aren't ingrained in the community like the Saints or Packers. Older people here didn't grow up Panther fans because the Panthers weren't around. They grew up Redskins fans, or Falcons fans, or Giants fans...and all of those allegiances were passed down to their children. I'm almost 30 and basically grew up with the Panthers so I'm a huge fan. My daughter will be a huge fan, and I've converted my wife into a huge fan. Unfortunately, there aren't many of us here right now and it's going to take time to create a consistent, passionate fanbase. Time and winning.

You just explained why Atlanta teams can have such bad followings. No one is from Atlanta, everyone is a transplant who already has a favorite team from back home.

Probably the same way you cope with being an NC State fan.
But seriously, its such a young organization its hard to be a true die-hard fan. The Panthers arent a bad franchise and in fact own the head to head records over New Orleans and Tampa Bay. They've been to the playoffs 4 times and have a 6-4 record in the postseason. It'll take a while to get a solid fanbase but thats only because its young, not because they suck or something.

No. They're going to follow who their parents rooted for.

I don't follow my father's team or my grandfather's team (colts and redskins respectively). I was in attendance yesterday and the amount of young adults (21-27) is astonishing. All first generation panther fans whose parents more than likely rooted for someone else and are coming of age to have their own disposable income.
In ten or so years the transplant fan problem will be limited as all first generation panther fans would be adults. book it.

Same thing with Jacksonville, tons of military and yankees. And the Jags have been bad for so long, it's hard to really get into it
