How can a P5 team like Kansas be so bad at football?
I realize they're a basketball school, but that still doesn't excuse how bad their football program truly is.

In this decade, the Kansas Jayhawks football program has an overall record of 15-81. Their record in the Big 12 is a staggering 4-68 over that same period. There's bad and then there is Kansas.

Talent in Kansas is piss poor, the talent in the states AROUND Kansas are on the low end as well. So where are you drawing players from? No tradition of any kind to sell. Program not supported.

I would go to a number of G5 schools to play football before I would go to Kansas. They literally have nothing to offer.

Horrendous in-state talent that is literally sandwiched in between two all-time great programs.

That was really hard to figure out.

No talent, no coaching, and no one cares. Beaty would get fired from Louisiana College with that record and they kept him around. They give him an extension when he was 2-22.

Their troubles started when they "fired" Mark Mangino in 2009. I think next to Glenn Mason in the mid 1990's he was one of the few KU coaches to ever have an overall winning record.

All you did was explain to me why they have always been a mediocre program. 10 years ago they came close to playing for a national championship in college football, finishing the '07 season with a 12-1 record and Orange Bowl victory.

What you said, however, doesn't explain how bad their football program is right now considering how consistently great their basketball program is. I seriously can't remember a P5 football program ever being this bad over this length of a time.

Northwestern in the late 70's won 3 games in 6 years. Rick Venturi went 1-31-1.

agreed, but again, it doesn't answer the question as to how the hell they're so bad in football, considering that Kansas State has been solid for a couple decades now. Manhattan, Kansas has half the population of Lawrence (Kansas univ), and yet K-state manages to be competitive and is able to pull off decent seasons almost every year

Because K State has a good coach. They were the worst program in the country before Snyder.

I think the OP is getting at the fact that KU has been historically bad by their own standards over the last decade.

Everyone knows they have some inherent disadvantages, but this has been a remarkable level of suck, even for them.

Somehow Turner Gil got a shorter leash.

yeah, but he wasn't freaking Nick Saban when he first started there. he built them up. the original premise I was responding to, was that the state of kansas has nothing to offer to a football recruit, and then I responded, if ksu can can do it, which is located in a town that's half of the town that KU is located in, then kansas should be able to at least go 6-6 most years

KSU doesn't recruit well either. Snyder gets a bunch of jucos and lower level recruits and they coach them up.

which is why I responded to LSUbase that IT IS possible for Kansas to have halfway decent team, if they can find a decent coach, considering that KSU is in a smaller town than KU and isn't thought to be any more prestigious than kansas university

So when I had yet to be born.

But seriously...I think it's much harder for a team from a major conference to suck as bad as Kansas has these days. With all of that money filtering into the athletic department's coffers from those multi-billion dollar TV deals, there is absolutely no excuse for teams to be terrible beyond belief. Heck, even Vanderbilt is bowling on a consistent basis now.

Kansas hasn't been to a bowl game in almost 10 years.

Why don't you give me one good reason to go play football for a bad team in BFE Kansas, especially if I'm a kid from a city. I'd rather go to UCF or somewhere like that.
