Hot take: even if Bama wins 50-6 tonight, technically still didn't "deserve" to be in

I see a lot of folks using the terms "best team" and "deserving" as synonyms. When it comes to sports that's not always the case.
No conference championship
Best win is over...MS State?
Lost to a now 4 loss Auburn

I can easily argue that either UCF, Ohio State, or USC was strictly more deserving of the spot.

If the playoff is simply going to go by eye test without real merit, then get rid of conference championships and expand the playoffs because the regular season doesn't matter. If you're deemed the better team regardless, you're going get in.

TL;DR: Stop giving mulligans to brand name teams who are going to get in on reputation alone. This may be the worst Saban team since 2007 but they're about to be handed another trip to the title game.

Unless they lose twice, Alabama will make the playoff every year. Humans have too much programmed bias to avoid the eye test.

Not playing in a conference championship game should be viewed as a loss. When compared to Wisconsin then it’s obvious who would and should have been selected. More bama bias bullshite.

Ok, they aren't beating the #1 team in the country 24-6 in the 4th quarter

This is the best take I have heard. I totally agree. It's getting real old.

Damn near converting me to an NFL fan.

So you are counting Auburn's game today since it helps your case and ignoring Alabama's win? Solid spin.

Almost every year right around this time I begin to appreciate the NFL playoff format more and more.

I thought there was a fair amount IIRC.

Penn State isn't their rival.

Totally independent from if they had done enough during the regular season to be in the playoff, but I understand it can be hard to parse that, especially if you are emotionally invested.

OSU shouldn't have got in either. Should have been Penn State.

There were plenty of people advocating for Penn State to be in over OSU

Ohio State, even though they didn't win their conference or even their division, was the only Big Ten team and one of 4 P5 teams with 1 or less losses. Also, they had a great resume highlighted by a road win over Big 12 champion Oklahoma.

To be the man, you gotta beat the man. Until someone proves otherwise, Alabama will always be the team to beat. And I hate saying that.
