Hockey doesn't get enough respect on this board

After basically checking out of all other sports the last two months during the Capitals Stanley Cup run, I think a lot of people on this board would really enjoy watching hockey even though culturally it is non existent where most of the board lives (I assume the majority are in SEC country).
It's hard hitting and the players are incredibly tough. Players don't complain or cause near the amount of drama that exist in the other major leagues either publicly through complaining on social media or via talk shows and other things like that. There's lots of action (fun fact hockey's clock only runs while the puck is in play, the only major sport to have 100% action time, the others aren't even close) and hockey has a minimal amount of commercials, I believe there are basically 3 commercial breaks each period and that includes even in the playoffs and other major games so the games don't drag on like they can with college football games (especially big ones). It also, in my experience, is still pretty affordable to go if you're in the area at least up until deep into the playoffs.
I was basically shocked at how many of my friends I graduated at LSU with basically joked and brushed off hockey as if it were similar to soccer. If you get into it and give it a chance I can't see how many of the posters here who bitch about football becoming soft and the social media drama from basketball don't enjoy watching hockey.

Hard to identify with a sport you never played

That sums it up right there
It's normally one of the most entertaining playoffs
But down here, we don't care as much

Yup. I honestly feel kinda bad because it's exactly the red blooded, intense, physical type of sport that I feel like a lot of people in the south feel like is slowly dying out in America. It was honestly refreshing to be able to watch that the last two months as well as the complete lack of political drama that surrounded it. It was awesome really.

Also hate to say it, but TV coverage could play into it.
As much as people hate ESPN, it would probably be better if they had the rights to NHL games.
Some of the games were on the Golf Channel and the NBC news channels during the beginning of the playoffs.

This board would rather argue over football and basketball since that's where their expertise lies, being that they played both in middle school once.

I remember after the big lockout in 04-05 ESPN dropping hockey and it kind've feeling devastating. But with the way ESPN is headed I'm not that upset about it. And I've grown up with the exact same broadcasting pair my entire life watching Caps games (outside of the playoffs). So you're probably right that having national coverage would help, but I do really love being able to hear my local guys call essentially every game.

Why don't you message me back when soccer players can check knuckles with each other like they would at sonic and only sit out for 5 minutes.

Agreed, haven't watched much hockey until these stanley cup finals and i enjoyed it 100x more than the NBA finals. will definitely tune in next year, just need a more local team to support to keep interest in it.

Hockey is a great sport to watch live. Do not really have any interest of watching it on tv.

It's still better to watch on tv than football, basketball, and baseball.

Yup. The community is a huge part of it. In Canada it's basically on the same level from youth until adulthood that baseball is most everywhere and football is in Texas. And because in America it's sort of more the stepchild of the major sports, it forces those who do participate to create those communities in the areas it exists as well. It's a really cool sport to grow up in.

Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals was both intense and amazing.
Surely ... more impressive in person ... but, not bad on TV.
The comparisons to soccer are just pure ignorance.
Anyone ... and, I mean, anyone ... can play soccer.
What NHL players can do is really impressive.

Then I guess anyone can play football, basketball, hockey, etc.

I'd say the biggest difference you notice when watching the different levels of hockey is how fast the game moves (ie. they can skate a lot better while being able to do all the other things). I once watched a college game, immediately followed by an AHL (AAA to those who don't follow hockey) game and then the next day we went to an NHL game and that's when it really became apparent at the biggest difference between the levels. Being able to do what they do but while skating instead of walking/running is pretty incredible

I would watch hockey if it didn't co exist at the same time as basketball. I think both leagues will even have playoff games on at the same time. That's my reasoning for not getting into it more

I think one or two 1st round games were on the golf channel because of scheduling conflicts.
