I love how at the end of the article, it states that anybody interested in becoming a referee should sign up through the LHSAA website.

“Yea. Parents are rough and out of control, much like some players. BUT, become a referee today”

about 10 years ago I signed up to be a basketball referee. Went through the seminars, clinics, and started. Started it off with a biddy tournament to get my feet wet. It was terrible. The parents were complete jackasses, and the coaches couldn't do anything to stop them. Even though some didn't want to. Told the guy running the tournament about it, and he said there was nothing he could do to control parents. He said he can barely get anyone to referee games.

I thought maybe doing some middle school and JV games would be better, just because the game was a little more advanced there. It was just as bad. And to be honest, the private school games and the couple tournaments I did for them were worse than the few public schools. I loved being on the court, but no way in hell I am going to be an official for basketball. The pay isn't worth it, and neither is the extreme drama you have to put up with.

I'm a LHSAA basketball official with 15+ years experience. I always feel safe in a high school game, but with the kids today, you have to have a zero tolerance policy for unsportsmanlike behavior. As soon as things get chippy, get their arse out of the game.
I'll sometimes do games for younger kids, but only for a catholic school league which runs a very tight ship. I don't do biddy ball or AAU games anymore. That shite can get crazy real quick and there is never any security present.

I see more bad behavior from the fans with the younger kids. I really can't remember the last time I had an issue with a fan in a high school game.

I watch a good bit of basketball around Lafayette, and some out of town. at times both can be tame, but at their worst, high school in my experience has been worse. Not just as a referee, as a spectator.

This would be near impossible to impose, but certain schools shouldn't be allowed to play at night. Only weekend day games before 3:00PM. Only half of the normal crowd will show up, and the ones that do are typically more tame at that time of day.

I refereed youth soccer when I was in highschool and I tried my hand at it again a few years ago. There were a few times I thought a coach was going to assualt me. Overall I enjoyed the experience and seeing the game through a different perspective, but the terrible parents and jackass coaches just killed the whole experience for me.

Referee associations need to start penalizing teams for parent behavior. It happens in hockey & lacrosse all the time. It shuts down the BS real quick.

You warn every coach that poor fan behavior towards officials will NOT be tolerated. That serves as the warning.
When the game is on, you penalize the team (in bball, technical foul for free throws. in soccer you get a PK, etc.)

Once you punish the parents & the coaches turn on them-then their BS stops.

The hosting team is in charge of the game from a crowd control stand point. In my opinion, too many administrators do not take this seriously. How many schools do you see escorting officials out after games? Administration needs to be more visible and control the situation. How many times do you see administration and/or security on the field or court at the end of the game? If you’d see more of this you’d see less problems.

The amount of bullshite is inversely proportional to the size of the players.

Same in football, the kids are rarely the problem.
