The BCS formula could still be used as far as the rankings are concerned, but then an 8 team playoff should take place. Here is what that would look like if it started today:

1 LSU v 8 Houston - LSU wins easily
2 Bama v 7 Boise St - Bama
3 Arkansas v 6 Stanford - Stanford
4 Ok State v 5 VTech - OSU

then it's semifinals:

LSU v Stanford(lowest seed remaining) - LSU...The nation still gets to see Luck against LSU defense
Bama v Ok State - Bama

BCSNCG: LSU v Bama. Still a rematch but the fact you have to go through more of a challenge to get there is a better way to prove a team is deserving.

That's 7 "major" bowl games creating boat loads of $$ for the schools and the NCAA. The other bowls such as Papa John's and Chick-Fil-A etc. could still go on and be just as irrelevant as they currently are.

why would the NCAA get any?

and how do the schools split it up?

are these home games?

I think the better question is, does Stanford REALLY beat Arkansas?

Well since most of the nation wants a playoff system, this is just a scenario that I have laid out.

Are you trying to tell me the NCAA gets no money from major bowls?

So Bama plays LSU regardless...

Cool, we've solved the problem.

with this format, I don't see any team ranked 3-8 that could beat LSU or Bama

Stanford's defense has got burned by the two good offenses they played. It may be the SEC Homer in me, but I'd take Arky.

so what you're saying is there is no need for playoffs, since the bcs is most likely going to get the same matchup......

No BCS conference is going to agree to any system that will result conference champs from a BCS conference being left out.

So according to your analysis, we would end up with exactly what the BCS is picking as its championship game already. What would be the point?

I like the 4 team playoff.

1) LSU - 4) Va Tech - Orange Bowl
2) Bama - 3) OSU - Rose Bowl
(assuming we beat Ark and UGA and no other upsets).

Winner of Orange Bowl and Rose Bowl play in Sugar Bowl for the NC.

Fiesta Bowl gets any 2 at-large teams.

BCS determines the top 4.

Rotate the bowls the same way the do now, everyone still gets the NC every 4 years.

BCS is still in play
It only extends the season 1 game for 2 teams
Eliminate conference tie-ins and automatic qualifiers (sorry ND)
No bowls are "watered down"

That's why you do this with the 6 BCS conf champs, a wild card (Bama here) and the highest non-BCS team.

Then you sort them by BCS ranking.

Profit.

What happens when LSU beats Arky and OU beats OSU?

We then have 4 possible rematches
