HE DID IT Eliud Kipchoge becomes first runner to go under 2 hours for the marathon 1:59:40
Runners World article

Saturday morning has been confirmed as the day and they’re aiming for between 5am - 9am (Vienna time) to start. That may change depending on weather conditions in Vienna. That time is 10 pm Friday - 2 am Saturday central time. I’m super hyped for this and plan on staying up to watch.

He’s definitely got a shot at it but his actual world record will still be more impressive. He and Bekele are 1 and 1A for the greatest distance runners of all time.

Honestly I feel like if he does it here he may get it in an actual race before too much longer. I’m a strong believer in seeing it can be done opening the flood gates for these things.

I gotta lean more Bekele just because of the range and longevity he’s shown. Kipchoge is definitely under him with gebrselassie behind. It’s not close after those 3.

You turn in your Vienna forecast for the forecast contest?

Nah it’s it’s own event. They’re basically doing everything they can get away with while still making it a legit world record I believe.

He is going to have 42 pacers, he is the only competitor so it won't be eligible for a WR.

Misunderstood that part of it. What’s the minimum number of competitors for something like this?

Haile Gebrselassie is a legend but I think that this era is more regulated than when he had his peak. Nowadays the dirty coaches jump through hoops to microdose whereas his era had a free-for-all of EPO (El Guerroj, Rashid Ramzi, Morcelli, the Spanish guys who came out of nowhere), not to mention that absurd era of Chinese female runners.

Yannis Nikolaou of the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) - athletics' governing body - told ITV News that races must:

Be sanctioned by the IAAF or by the Athletics Federation of the host country.
The course must be measured and certified by an official.
There must be anti-doping controls.
There must be at least three competitors.
Pacemakers cannot rotate in and out of a race. (pacers will be rotating in and out)
An athlete cannot be paced by a vehicle with a motor.
Refreshments must be taken from official stations and not brought to an athlete. (they will be bringing fluids to him)

Bekele’s great track marks also came before there was a reliable EPO test (2006), so I’m not sure you can hold that against Geb but not against him.

It’s hard to keep Farah out of a top 3 list. His multiple 3:28 efforts balance against other guys’ superior marathon results. He never really chased marks at 3k/5k/10k in his best years (‘12-‘16). However he has more Olympic golds at 5k than Bekele, Geb, and Kipchoge combined. In London he took down 5 fresh guys who had run under 12:50 that season. Bekele showed vulnerability at 5k in his peak track years losing worlds/OG in ‘03, ‘04, and ‘07.

The strongest argument for those 3 above Farah is longevity—they all put up world class marks 15+ years apart. Geb WC 10k in ‘93 WR marathon ‘09. Bekele WC 10k in ‘03 2:01 marathon ‘19. Kipchoge WC 5k in ‘03 2:02 marathon’19. Bekele’s domination of cross was pretty amazing as well—double world champ 5 years in a row.

Good explanation. I had never heard/seen that. I thought I remembered when they first announced this that they were going for a real deal world record.

solid points tc, only thing that keeps me hesitant on mo is the marks. The golds are impressive and the dude is probably one of the best strategists in running of all time. I just wish he had put up a world record to back up the golds. He probably does deserve to be mentioned with the others though.

He tried this before a year (?) or so ago and was like 4 minutes short. Further he’s at higher altitude this time so I don’t know if enough has changed that he’ll get it

I would have had Gebresalasie #1 until Bekele's marathon. Hard to go against the range of Haile..3:31? 1500m pr to world record holder in the marathon (and a lot of WRs in between those distances) Kipchoge is great and top 10 but until he becomes the fisrt under 2hrs....hes a world record holder
