Wow.

DFA'd for the return of Pedroia. Pretty shocking to just designate you're starting 1st baseman and middle of the order bar, even if he's been pretty shitty recently.

Dude's being paid $22.7 million for replacement level production, I don't blame them one bit.

I don't blame them, and it makes keeping him at the top of the line a little more logical. Either showcasing him for a trade (heh) or one last chance.

For his 2nd stint with the Sox, he gave 1.2 War for 80 plus million.

This year, but the option doesn't vest for next year.

Yes, but they'd have to pay him $20 million and have him on the team next year if he reaches 497 plate appearances. He's not worth the money at all so far, so a release is the correct measure to take instead of holding back his PA's at the risk of grievance.

Not if he's claimed off of waivers.

Not saying that he will be... but if he was...

There's no team stupid enough to do that. If he passes waivers, any team could sign him for league minimum.

Well, there is a team stupid enough, but the Angels already have their 1B/DH situation figured out.

No, if a team claims him off of waivers, the Red Sox could release him and his entire contract to the claiming team. ETA: They could also work out a trade or rescind the waiver and put him back on the 40-man.

If (well, when) he passes through waivers, and another team signs him, then they would have to pay his 22.7 less what the other team is paying him.

If it helps, my initial comment was less about the Sox trimming the salary fat and more about paying way too much in return for way too little.

There is also the additional pressure of playing a guy you're paying so much. Even though he sucks, if he's on the roster they're going to feel pressure to use him. This takes that off the table, allowing for more pure baseball decisions (to whatever extent they are) to be made.

Sox wanted to avoid his option year vesting. Easier to cut bait now than wait until he heats up again.

Remember that time Hanley finished 8th in the 2013 NL MVP voting despite only playing 86 games?

He was on fire for those 86 games though.
