please explain to me how these guys get the grass to have the checkerboard look. thank you gentlemen.

The mowers have rollers on them. If you stand at one end of a stripe in will appear light green. If you walk to the opposite end of the same stripe it will appear dark green. The grass is pressed therefore the pattern is made.
