Sounds like its all but a done deal. Georgia offers Thad Matta Basketball Job.
Great hire as Thad is a great guy, great coach and runs a clean program.

rumors are it's somewhere in the neighborhood of between $3-3.5 per year for around 6 years.
If we close this it's an absolute grand slam. Exceeding all expectations.

Looks much older than just 50.

Didn’t he have some health problems?
Posted on 3/13/18 at 1:50 pm to boosiebadazz
Read he needed back surgery.
I guess he got that done this past year.

He had back/leg issues. By all accounts they seem to have improved considerably and aren't much of a concern.

When did you get a competent athletic department?

Is it? Has anything changed regarding his health? He essentially retired/was fired at OSU last summer due to his health and the impact it had on coaching/recruiting. Yes, the expectations at UGA would be far lower than those he set for himself at OSU, but is his health going to be continued issued in recruiting and coaching. That's why he left OSU (or at least that was the story).
It looks like UGA is taking a page out of the Auburn, Tenn., Miss. State playbook in hiring a former "big name" coach whose star had faded at their old school.

Are these the same folks that gave us family zones and let coaches walk and fired a baseball coach that played for a title for no real good reason? It's like a complete reversal of fortunes lately.

If you're at all familiar with UGA's basketball history, this would qualify as a grand slam.

i'm in. i like thad a bit. im slightly worried about the end of his tenure at ohio state and just his desire to coach/health issues.
i don't love the fact that this year's ohio state team was really good and he didnt do shite the last 2 years.
but, im a fan. i personally dont think we will win a national title with him or anything, but he will take us from perennial postseason appearance to perennial tournament team in a few years, which is what i am dying for.

He's clearly better than Fox, that's really all that matters for evaluating this move, right?

uh, yes.
Matta has more NCAAT wins at OSU than the number of NCAA tournament games UGA has ever even played in. He is an elite coach and can recruit, and our expecations as a fanbase couldn't be a whole lot lower right now. To think this is anything but an A+ hire is being naive.
And let's say his health is a big problem, which by all accounts it isn't. Say he's only here 2 seasons but improves the roster with recruiting and gets us 2 tourney wins (1 win each year). Even that alone would be light years better htan we've had since Harrick.
So yeah, it's a grand slam.

yeah pretty much. I think when the board/powers that be essentially strongarmed Mcgarity into hiring Smart, and seeing the success and ROI that's brought, it's opened his eyes on how to go about doing things. Our baseball coach should have been fired last year (and fox) but at least we're trending right.

for me, yes, pretty much.
ive always been scared of making a bad hire and ruining the momentum we have. laugh all you want but the fact that we have been above .500 and making NITs for 5 years now is positive momentum for us.
this should build on that momentum and help take the next step, but not the final step IMO.
