Why have they sucked for so long? It seems like they haven't been relevant since Allen Iverson was a Hoya

They went to the final four with Jeff Green and Roy Hibbert back in 2007.

Eta: No Jeff Green, he left the season before the final four run.

I was about to post this. I guess the OP didn't look it up.

How are they doing now with Ewing as head coach?

15-13.

The "hire the legend/alumni" thing for Georgetown and St. John's doesn't seem to be bringing them back to prominence.

Because Big John retired. An elite private school that's no longer in a premier conference better have a transcendent coach if it wants to be good at basketball.

John Thompson was revolutionary when he showed up at Georgetown in the 70's. He went straight from a HS coach in DC to the head job. He immediately started to bring in great black basketball players from in and around the DC area with him to a prestigious private, catholic university that had a almost totally white student population. After doing so, Georgetown was one of the founding members of the Big East and joined other private, religious based universities (except UConn). The big difference was that Georgetown had a lot of great black players and the other schools hadn't yet bought in on bringing those guys in to their schools (except for Syracuse). Plus, Thompson was one of on a few black head coaches, so there was a natural draw for guys to want to play for him.

Since that time, the rest of college basketball has caught up and Georgetown refuses to get away from the Thompson coaching tree. After Thompson retired they have hired his former lead assistant from the 80's; his son; and now his first mega star (Patrick Ewing)

It's good but in terms of brand it's a 2nd tier conference now. Back in Big John's day it was either 1 or 2 with the ACC.

It's definitely not the conference that it was, but I think it can get back. They get pretty good national coverage with Fox now. The key for schools like Georgetown and St. Johns is getting the best city talent to stay. NYC and DC have crazy talent and the cities would come out big for teams with the top locals.

I went to a LOT of games in the Capital Centre back in the day. Ewing was a freshman and Eric "Sleepy" Floyd was a senior. That Georgetown team was fun to watch.

I think that is still too early to call on Georgetown
