Former #1 pick tells Joe Burrow to “pull an Eli”
quote:

Steve Bartkowski personally delivered the message to Burrow’s family during a Davey O’Brien Award event on Sunday night in Fort Worth. Bartkowski, the No. 1 overall pick by the Atlanta Falcons in 1975, received the Davey O’Brien Legends Award this year. “They’re Ohio guys,” Bartkowski said. “I might’ve offended them by telling them that, if it’s the Bengals, I think I’d pull an Eli Manning on that one. I said, you’ve got a chance to do that. That’s happened. [John] Elway kind of set the tone, then the Mannings delved into it after Eli was picked by San Diego.”

quote:

“I know what it’s like to go to a bottom-feeder team. I’d hate to see that happen to him to be honest. They beat me up. I spent more time at the hospital recuperating from injuries my first three years than I did throwing touchdowns. It was tough.”

quote:

As far as Burrow is concerned, he refused to tip his hand on his thoughts about going to the Bengals. “I do have leverage,” Burrow said. “They have their process and I have my process. We haven’t even gotten to the (NFL) combine yet. There’s a lot of things that happen leading up to the draft and a lot of information gathered.

It would hold more weight if Boomer and/or Palmer were doing it.

Less so if Dalton did it because he wants to keep being overpaid.

XFL? What leverage does he have exactly? Elway had the Yankees. Eli had his last name I suppose.

It's true. The Falcons were and continue to be a bottom feeder team.

Burrow has been substantially warned to stay away from the Bengals, and more specifically, Mike Brown, who is probably the worst owner in sports.

Carson Palmer has also warned him. Don't do it dude... You can't change that tiger's stripes.

There's actually a situation here with other 1st found QBs to maybe get away with an Eli/Elway.

The underlying problem with the concept is that Burrow isn't a pussy. Pulling an Eli wouldn't be in his DNA.

Didn't hurt Elway or Eli. Both got a couple of Lombardis by doing it

What's Burrow's leverage? Elway had baseball. Manning had being a Manning. What does Burrow have?

Great, he'll be a non-pussy out of the league truck driver in 3 years.

Everyone needs favorable conditions to be great.

Imagine Brady on the Browns in 2003. Dude is probably collecting alimony from Giselle now.

Success in the NFL is a fine line. You can win the lottery going to a great organization and sitting behind a legend (Rodgers) or go to fricking Houston and lay on your back for 5 years (Carr).

Being a Manning isn’t leverage. The fact that you can just not fricking play is leverage

Well they can say, "ok, frick off." Being a Manning was leverage because he was plugged in with Cooper or other people he his dad had connections with. That's how Arch was able to pull it off. I guess LSU alums will take care if Joe. But he has no NFL pull that Manning had

I’m not saying the Bengals are a well run organization or anything but I don’t see why people are acting like they’re Clippers under Sterling or the Marlins. They’ve had some good teams the past decade and half. Far better track record than the Dolphins.

Yeah, his leverage is that picking a guy #1 overall who refuses to play for you would be a disaster.

Sure, but he also has to sit out a year and risk getting picked by another bottom feeder in 2021.

And missing out on a contract that will set him, his children, his grandchildren, and his great-grandchildren for life.
