I remember playing in some pickup games at the local high school, and it was a lot of blue collar good ole boys who needed to unload some steam. I remember taking some of these hits.

But only once.

Corso was right when he said, a decade ago, that the real reason for all the head injuries are, ironically, the helmets.

People use them as weapons.

our Thanksgiving family football game is still tackle and it gets heated some years

my older brother is the runt of the family, so he feels like he has to take a lifetime of being a midget (imagine being 5'9" ) out on me every year

it normally looks like though

This would end in fisticuffs in my family.

I've always thought this. No helmets would make ball carriers and defenders both think twice about leading with their heads when they're about to make contact. To expand on that, with no helmets they'd also have to make shoulder pads out of the same material they make knee pads out of so no one gets their head bashed by that hard plastic coming with a full head of steam.

But football helmets are too marketable and recognizable so no one wants to eliminate them

My brothers and I are in our 40s and 50s. It would end with ER visits here.

Lighter, less protective helmets. Maybe something like a hockey helmet or go back to the leather helmet days. No facemasks.

I agree with this premise. No pads would make everyone think twice about how to tackle properly. I've always thoughts why Rugby players tackle so well...

... with that said there were a lot of people throwing themselves like missiles in that video and I didn't expect to see that.

ETA: But at least those were shoulder first for the most part.

Similar to playing kill the man with the ball/Smear the westcoastag, except it was you vs everyone w/no pads, and everyone played to hurt some one good.

I played my last no helmet and pads tackle football game shortly after I graduated college. In the middle of that game I realized if I got hurt it was no longer just a visit to campus doctor and missing a few days of class, but real medical bills and missing work from my crappy first post-college job.

Ain't no way now, not enough alcohol and Advil in the world.

Paterno was the one back in the early 90s who advocated removing the facemasks. Take those off and people would quit launching themselves into opposing players. Concussions would drop like a rock.

That first play was a planned murder attempt.

Yep

In my late teens/early 20s I'd spend summers working in Orlando(from south Louisiana.)

We had a group of about 15-20 dudes, and one of my bosses had access to a baseball field, and we'd meet up every Wednesday night at midnight to play tackle football. It would usually end up being something like 7 on 7.

For just a group of buddies playing ball, it was pretty competitive and aggressive but fun as shite. I couldn't imagine doing that when not at my peak like, say, in my 30s.
