Joe Burrow opened Boxing Day by dropping 525 yards and five touchdowns on the Ravens, and Dak Prescott closed it by torching Washington for 322 yards and four touchdowns in the first half. We were preparing to update our list of the greatest games ever, but as it turns out, neither was even the best game of the year; Prescott was only in fifth place this week. While the two quarterbacks won fantasy playoff games across the country, our statistics don't give them as much credit for feasting on terrible pass defenses, which is exactly what they did on Sunday. In fact, it's what Burrow has been doing all season.

There are other reasons Burrow and Prescott rank lower than you might expect—they also combined for 20 incomplete passes and a half-dozen sacks—but opponent adjustments are the biggest factor holding them down. The Ravens finished Sunday's game with their top three corners and a starting safety out with injuries; they were 30th in pass defense DVOA going into Monday Night Football. They are allowing 8.2 yards per throw and 13.0 yards per completion, ranking last in the league in both categories, and next to last with an interception rate of 1.1%.

Burrow has now thrown 84 passes against the Ravens this year, and they are directly responsible for seven of his 30 touchdowns through the air. He has also thrown 40-plus passes against the Steelers (in two games), Chargers, and Browns, all of whom are in the bottom half of the league in pass defense DVOA. In fact, Burrow has only played two games against teams in the upper half of those rankings: the 10th-place Vikings and 12th-place Packers. He completed better than 70% of his passes and averaged 8.3 yards per throw in those two games, with four touchdowns and two interceptions, though he was sacked eight times. Cincinnati beat Minnesota by a field goal but lost to Green Bay by the same margin. Meanwhile, he has played four games against our bottom three pass defenses: the Jaguars, the Jets, and the Ravens twice. Burrow topped 10.0 yards per throw against those four with a dozen touchdowns and only two interceptions. The Bengals went 3-1, somehow losing to Mike White and the Jets.

That’s some of the dumbest shite I’ve ever read. The article blames him for his terrible offensive line.

The title of the article says it “may” be overrated lol. Like not even willing to make a statement they are suggesting.

Also bengals are hosting chiefs and play at the browns so their research appeared too lazy to get that point correct.

Also I love how it mentions Ravens are without their top corners this week, then aggregates his stats for both games he faced them to further illustrate their point, but conveniently fail to mention he shredded them the first game when Marlo and Jimmy Smith were still playing. He threw for over 200 yards just against Marlo in that first game.

PFF > Football Outsiders.

For sacks they have burrow as responsible for about 1/3 of his sacks, the rest are solely on his line. That’s top ten amongst qb’s for best sack avoidance, just a shitty o-line.

For ints, he has 16 turnover worthy throws all year and 14 ints, by far the worst interception luck in the league. The 16 turnover throws is again in top ten amongst qb’s for least throws of that nature.

football outsiders was once kind of relevant because they were one of the early adopters of analytics in football but they've long since been surpassed by better models.

They've kind of been reduced to headline grabbers like the article above to get clicks

WTF? Burrow’s completion % was 80% and Dak’s was 72%. Those are elite %. What kind of dumb fricking shite is this?

The problem with these analyses is that some of the reason these teams are in the bottom half of the league is because Burrow shredded them. The way you get to the bottom half is by giving up lots of yards and points to all the good QBs you play

People are so quick to say Joe leads the league in I terceptions When it’s like a 5 way tie and there are 11 QBs with 12-14 Ints.

Like Joe is some pick throwing outlier.

All I know is if anyone else (ahem, Herbert) put up beast numbers against the Ravens and burrow lost then you know who would have been the very first to take laps on it here.

But no, Herbert got absolutely demolished by the Ravens when they played.

And lost to the Texans

I'd say it was the south carolina fan since he has a really creepy obsession with burrow and chase...but I don't think he's capable of stringing together that many sentences

28 of 39 and 37 of 46. Combined they completed 76% of their passes which would be 6% higher than the best completion % in the league, but the dude admits this brought their score down?

quote:

They are allowing 8.2 yards per throw and 13.0 yards per completion, ranking last in the league in both categories, and next to last with an interception rate of 1.1%.
Burrow averaged 11.4 YPA, 14.2 yards per throw, and a 0% INT rate

quote:

Faced with such pathetic competition, Burrow loses 56 DYAR
Makes perfect sense!!!

If 525 yards, 11.4 YPA, 14.2 yards per throw doesn't do anything but decrease your score more than any other QB, then it stands to reason logically that he would have needed something like 800 yards passing and 7 TDs to have one of the higher increases on the day.
