And maybe Hamilton specifically.

Raikkonen was making some moves today.

Like I said, they need a foreigner in charge. They're so dysfunctional when an Italian is the boss.

Rossi just won the Indy race. Would like to see him get a seat in a Haas.

Baku up next. So excited, hope it doesn't disappoint. Beautiful track/setting.

Rossi smoked the rest of the field, fortunately a lot of action for all the other places

Baku cannot be worse than China. That one needed a crash/mechanical failure near the front to spice things up but instead we got...Kimi showing his class in the midfield, the Torpedo strikes back, and a nice race by Albon. Oh and Danny Ric finished a race.

Merc should get a 3 spot grid penalty every time they mention Ferrari’s speed advantage for the rest of the season.

Hate the circuit but it's usually a good race.

That long arse main straight and over effective DRS is going to make all the passing happen right there

That's about the only place it can happen.

Kvyat disagrees with you.

Personally I think he was profiled this week with the penalty. Lando came back in his line. Especially for lap 1.

Wasn't he in line for a F1 seat at one point? Remind me what happened there. Or am I thinking of someone else?

So I watched the first episode of the F1 thing on Netflix.

Does anyone stand a chance but the top teams? It doesn’t look like it based on these results so far.

I'm no Kvyat fan but I totally agree.

Rossi had a seat in 2015 with Manor. Personally I don't see him trying to make a return to F1 with all the success he's been having in IndyCar.

No, unless something really wild happens, the only teams with a chance to win a race are Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull

It depends on what you mean.

Over just one season usually one, maybe two teams, separate themselves. Different reasons for this, I think most boils down to how much money is involved and how much the big teams commit to win. Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull (Honda/Aston Martin) are all winning names and can dedicate lots of money in promotion if their brand. They have money to burn.

Meanwhile, the middle teams are spinning their wheels because of the strict regulations and because the larger teams can just out R&D them.

Brawn was probably the last small team to find a loophole and expolit the hell out of it, while claiming a championship. (Yes, previous years R&D helped, but the double diffuser).

Red Bull taking of Jaguar wasn't exactly a big name at the time either.

So, each year you can probably see pretty quick how it will shake out. However, just 4 years ago Williams started a race 1&3 and screwed the pooch to finish 3rd. Now they are a making starts as a legacy team.

It can change quick for a team once on top to slip down the grid. Red Bull fighting for 3rd is another example.

Spot on, fightin tigers.

While I would like more parity in F1, this class touts itself as the "pinnacle of motorsports". In essence it's the unlimited class and anything goes as long as it's within the formula. Money is the key differentiator between the top few teams and the ones in the mid-pack. Specifically, wind tunnel time because it's all about aero. Look at Mercedes and Williams. Mercedes is the best team in the field and has been since the start of the turbo V6 hybrid era. Williams is barely hanging on at the back of the pack. Yet both teams run the same engine.

However, just 4 years ago Williams started a race 1&3 and screwed the pooch to finish 3rd.

A team can plummet from respectability to irrelevance in a remarkably short span of time. However it takes longer to go the other direction. Ferrari are in that situation now. They once were dominant then fell on hard times. With Vettel and Arrivabene, they started to climb back out of the hole 4 years ago and now they're almost on par with Mercedes.

One thing that hurt Williams I think was losing their title sponsor Martini. Then to make matters worse, they had a deal almost in place with Rich Energy and Haas swooped in and undercut them. So I'm sure Claire has been having difficulty finding money to run the team. They pushed Massa out to make room for Stroll because he was bringing in lots of cash but turns out he's a shitty driver and ended up at Racing Point anyway after Daddy bought the team. And they lost Bottas to Mercedes after the surprise retirement of Rosberg. Everything that could go wrong for them has gone wrong in the last few years.

Interesting article from Stefan Johansson on motorsports.com about how to "fix" F1. This is part 1 of 4 so I'll update when the other parts come out.

I can't say I agree with everything he proposes. For one thing he advocates using spec parts, like wings for example. While it would probably improve the racing and keep costs down for the smaller teams, I wouldn't want F1 turned into a semi-spec series like IndyCar. However, he is in favor of dialing back aero, which I definitely agree with. Aerodynamics make the car go faster but it doesn't do anything to improve the racing.

Part 1
Part 2
