Here we go. We're at Albert Park in Melbourne, Australia. The first qualifying session of the year has just finished, and now we have a sense of the true pace of the teams, and it's not looking good from a competitive standpoint.

The 2nd fastest team Ferrari is 0.7s off the pace. That's huge! Mercedes should run away with this race.
The fact that P8 is almost 2s off the pace is pathetic. Only a few cars are going to finish on the lead lap, unless they have a couple of safety cars to bunch up the field.
I missed Q1 and Q2, and only saw Q3, but I just read that the reason Gasly got stuck so far back is that Red Bull opted to do just one run in Q1. Gasly was just 0.144s slower than Verstappen, but when the other teams did a 2nd run and improved their times, that 0.144s was the difference between Verstappen moving on to Q2 and Gasly getting stuck in P17. The team screwed up.
If Verstappen can finish the race (a big if) and compete with Ferrari, that will be a big boost for Honda, and Red Bull's decision to go with Honda (not that they had much choice).
US team Haas is looking good!

The Aussie race is a decent time for the west coast (Saturday at 10:00 pm PDT), but that makes it awkward for the eastern US (Sunday at 1:00 am EDT).

Really pulling for Kimi to make something happen at Sauber/Alfa.
Must be a bit of a bummer for Danny, but I’m sure it won’t be overnight success in a new car with a new team.
Also glad to see the Haas cars up there. Hope they don’t choke like last year and give F1.5 a legit go.

This is my first season trying to keep up. I’m going to rely on some true fans to talk technical and teach me the ins and outs
Was a bit disappointed to wake up and see Mercedes still dominating. I was hoping for a competitive 1-3 and good battle for 4th(like anybody) Oh well.
Glad for team America though.

I’m far from an expert, started following last season. That said, the new rule for fastest lap has potential to make things interesting. Fastest lap in the top 10 on race day gets a point.
Agree with above though, this season will be about the new drivers. I assume Mercedes will dominate as per usual.

Not a good first qualifying of the year for Renault. I’m hoping to see them challenge Red Bull some this year.

Merc didn't sandbag. They showed exactly this pace during winter tests. They only went all out once at were faster than Ferrari when they did.

Maybe, but probably not. Hamilton will save the engine and not worry about the one point. Formula 1.5 will be the ones fighting over that 1 point.
Save engine = turn down performance, use less fuel (more weight), stay on older tires longer.

Glad to see Grosjean and Magnussen off to a solid start. Hopefully they both finish in points to start the year.
Shocked to see Renault finish so poorly we will see how the drivers compete tomorrow. Wonder how the veteran drivers took Norris' finish.

The race for positions 4 through 10 will be the best racing and drama of the weekend, as it has for the last few years. Mercedes dominated qualifying last year and Ferrari pulled the upset because of mistakes, so it may be interesting to see. I wish there was some more parity amongst the teams but looking like a two team breakaway for 2019

It is more likely for mid-tier teams to pick up the fastest lap point. The top tier teams won't push their engines nor potentially hurt their race strategy by hammering their tires. Mid-level teams with someone with good safe track position can come in late for their last stop put on the races softest compound and take a couple of flyers with low fuel. Those points can mean lots of extra money for the mid-tier teams. Given it looks like a Mercedes whitewash is possible Hamilton won't need to push for them.
