Q: What's the purpose of the playoff selection committee?

A: "to select the four best teams from among several with legitimate claims to participate." (Source: selection committee protocol)

Q: How are they supposed to decide who the 4 best teams are?

A: There is no mandatory formula or criteria. The committee has consistently said they look at each team's "resume" or "complete body of work." According to the official protocol, one of the goals of the CFP selection committee is to allow "enough flexibility and discretion to select a non-champion or independent under circumstances where that particular non-champion or independent is unequivocally one of the four best teams in the country."

This year, based on the above we can pretty safely assume that the committee will first rank the conference champions based on their resume, which will go something like:

1. Bama
2. Clemson
3. OU
4. OSU

Then they will look at the teams who didn’t win their conference or don’t play in a conference and determine if they are unequivocally one of the four best teams in the country (in other words, undoubtedly have one of the 4 best resumes in the nation).

Comparing UGA’s resume to OU’s and OSU’s, I don’t think you can say without doubt UGA has a better resume than either. Therefore, UGA is out.

Doing that comparison with Notre Dame is a little tougher. Notre Dame has a decent schedule and won every game. OSU has more high quality wins and a conference championship, but at the end of the day Notre Dame didn’t lose by 29 points to a 6-6 team, and I feel ok saying for that reason Notre Dame undoubtedly has a better resume than Ohio State.

Comparing Notre Dame’s resume to OU’s, with OU’s only loss to a decent Texas team by 3 points who they just beat yesterday, I feel ok saying that Notre Dame does not undoubtedly have a better resume than OU.

Therefore, the final rankings will be:

1. Bama
2. Clemson
3. OU
4. Notre Dame

If the committee had an ounce of consistency or integrity, this is what their rankings would look like.

Today has sucked for me. It’s me vs my coworkers. 3 v 1. They all swear UCF SHOULD be in. This is 2.5 hrs in.

OSU has one major data point that they are far behind in, and it’s a pretty major one. Don’t lose to shite teams and you won’t have to melt in every thread because you aren’t getting in.

Every team in the top ten beats Notre Dame by three touchdowns.

Michigan is still a top ten team, and Notre Dame beat them.

UCF should absolutely be in. There is no chance in hell that they WILL get in. The system is so rigged that even Notre Dame has to sweat it out after winning every single game on the schedule.

The CFP is absolutely corrupt and unfairly biased. They don’t follow any set criteria. It’s all about the “eye test” which really means, who will make the most money.

Absolutely not, but doesn’t matter because Ohio State lost by 3 touchdowns to Purdue. MELT!

ND fans don’t even believe they’d beat OSU.

I don’t think OSU should get in. I’m not melting about that. I would be championing for any 12-1 conference champ. The system is broken.

As I said before, if OU beat UT the first time and OSU beat Purdue, we have a system for 4 teams and 5 undefeated teams. That means the model is broken.

Based on what? They have a better resume than OU or ND?

Ohio State only fricked themselves

Really unsure why this is such an issue for thier fans

Don't lose to Purdue and you're in the playoffs. What a novel concept

Link?

Also why would a team they beat by 7 beat them by 21

It’s also awesome when Ohio St and Alabama fans argue a team that didn’t have to play a CCG should not get in

It’s really a shame they shite the bed so bad in that game. I’d personally much rather see OSU in the playoffs than ND.

Two years in a row left holding the big10 bag at the corner like a .25 hooker. Which year hurt most? Last year with 2 SEC teams or this year with OU and undefeated ND kicking your arse to the curb.
