An ESPN-specific subscription-based streaming service is in the works, according to the Wall Street Journal. ESPN would continue to offer its TV channels for cable subscribers, even after the debut of its stand-alone streaming service geared toward cable cord-cutters, the Wall Street Journal reported. There is no timetable for the launch of the ESPN streaming service, a project that has been internally code-named as "Flagship."

ESPN's current streaming service, ESPN+, which launched in 2018, streams MLB and NHL games, but does not include the high-value NFL and NBA games that are only available on TV.

According to S&P Global Market Intelligence, ESPN collects more than $9 per cable bill. Comparatively, other cable networks average $0.49.

The actual ESPN+ interface and UI is a fricking abomination. It also randomly signs me out and sends me into a sign in loop like once a month. It’s stunning to me a corporation with the financial muscle they have can’t even design a functional streaming application. This should be a complete disaster

I think we all knew this was coming.

Live sports had been propping up satellite and cable for well over a decade.

At some point, the satellite/cable companies can't afford to pay up to avoid nfl/ncaa from being competitors and not inventory.

It will be interesting to see what happens to the 200 other channels after losing live sports.

To be clear, this is the main ESPN they would offer as a streaming service. $60/yr? More?

Gonna be cool when someone decides to bundle all these standalone subscriptions for every single channel

Oh wait.. that was cable .

Trying to figure out the pricing on this will be the challenge of a lifetime for ESPN’s number crunchers.

However, there are still high value events on other channels.

Fox has the World Cup and NBC has the Olympics. Those are easy to plan for though, you just subscribe to a package including those channels for one month at a time.

The bigger challenge will be college football and NFL.

I’m not sure there will be a better plan than YouTubeTV tbh

You don't quite have the definition of "bundle " correct.
Bundles are small.
Packages are large.

The espn bundle is manifest destiney

It means ESPN will gradually shift everything to the subscription service

Way more. Think something like $20-30/month.

Not the worst thing in the world if you don't watch any networks beyond the big 4 or other local channels that can be caught by a regular antenna.

But if you need FS1, MLB or NFL Network, any of the news networks, etc., something like YouTube TV or Fubo is still the way to go for streamers.

I just want one streaming service to offer a nothing but sports package. I don't need any other cable channel just give me ESPN, MLB, Golf, FS1, etc.

i know everyone loves to bash ESPN, but i'd pay $20-25/month easily if it means i get all of ESPN, ESPN+ and SECN and SECN+, meaning i can watch every LSU game of every sport if i so chose. There's only 1 month out of the year that doesn't have LSU football/basketball/baseball on tv, and that's July.

I don't know what people with cable are actually watching. Do you seriously watch reruns of the office with commercials? Outside of live sports and the free OTA channels of CBS/ABC/NBC/FOX, why does anyone need cable?
without ESPN, FoxSports and Turner sports, traditional cable packages would'nt exist.

this too.
but that'll never happen.
ESPN, Fox, NBC, Turner, that just about covers everything, although i'm not sure who MLBtv and NBAtv are affiliated with.

this is bud light level disconnected from the reality of the market they are targeting.

they cut the cord because they dont want to pay for TV, not because they arent happy with the choices they have

They cut the cord because cable TV had gotten so expensive trying to keep live sports in the fold (and not as competition).

A la Carte has always been inevitable.
If you don't want live sports, don't buy it (i.e. cable has been charging for it for 40 years).

This is the most efficient model.

I agree.

If you want all of them, you will buy all of them (just like we did with upgraded cable packages).
But if you don't care about Bravo, Own, WE, etc... this way you aren't paying the pennies that would go to those channels.

Only once a month for you?

It happens to me every other week.
