ESPN just reported it is losing subscribers at the fastest pace in it's history -- accelerating from 1% to 4.5% in the past year alone

They are trying to thread the needle with ESPN+ and will turn to ABC for more reach on rights deals.

Plan may not work, but the logic seems sound.

Good maybe they'll lower their cable fees. MNF should be on over the air instead of cable.

At some point they stopped giving us sports and highlighted, and started being a news channel. They dont understand we went to sports to get AWAY from the news of the day.
Simply look at their app...you go for game scores, and you have to deal with this brahan of video clips of comolete trash

Agreed. I was wondering if the Super Bowl would ever be on ESPN (w/o ABC), but this right here shows you that it'll likely never happen in our lifetimes! They need to figure out a way to put MNF on ABC...no idea why this hasn't been done yet!

I'm old enough to remember when MTV played videos all day and night...then it just became "shows, and guys snowboarding" Butthead

Similar crap is happening with them, but at least ESPN has had multiple channels for a while.

And ESPN is a leading cause of cord cutting because they're by far the most expensive channel when it comes to fees they charge cable providers per subscriber.

My guess is that the ESPN/ABC folks probably figure that if they put MNF on ABC that then they'd lose ESPN subscribers at an even faster rate because they'd have one less major reason to keep a cable package that included ESPN if MNF was put on ABC.

most cord cutters are still consuming ESPN thru other avenues

This.

I think "ESPN is losing subscribers" is a bit misleading. Nearly all cable channels are losing subscribers through the traditional medium, but ESPN has a huge digital presence and viewership through streaming services.

It's why, at least in my opinion, that ESPN's investment in rights deals with certain leagues and conferences will ultimately pay off in the long run.

Imagine ESPN shifting essentially all its content and live sports to an a la carte or streaming subscription model (basically everything moves to ESPN+). What sports fan wouldn't sign up?

its a bargaining chip to still use in negotiations with service providers. "You can not pay our rate, but your subscribers will lose their shite when they can't watch the NCG"

its why ESPN is preparing to pay a ridiculous amount for the the rights to the SEC

Would not be shocked if major sporting events become pay per view somewhere down the line.

Now that Vue is gone I'm trying out different streaming services and all I really want is the ESPN channels. I'd pay 20-30/mo for a stand alone ESPN package, they need to get on that

Yep, it's fun to poke fun at their politics bullshite but the main reason ESPN is in trouble is becaues the market for their non-sporting event content disappeared.

You don't need them for news, highlights, or analysis you can do that 24/7 anywhere.

The only thing remotely interesting on ESPN is actual live sporting events.
