If only the Braves could have signed their near miss.

Let's take a snapshot of all 30 teams, looking at their best first-round pick since the draft began in 1965, a late-round gem (10th round or later) and one who got away (a player they drafted but failed to sign).
If only the Braves could have signed their near miss.

The one who got away: Randy Johnson (fourth round, 1982). Imagine a rotation with Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, John Smoltz and the Big Unit.
Some other cool misses:

The one who got away: Kris Bryant (18th round, 2010). In the same draft, the Blue Jays snagged Noah Syndergaard with the 38th pick -- only to trade him as a minor leaguer.
quote:
The one who got away: Roger Clemens (12th round, 1981). Undrafted out of high school, the Mets took Clemens out of San Jacinto JC, but he turned down a $30,000 offer and went to the University of Texas.

The one who got away: Barry Bonds (second round, 1982). OK, they eventually got him as a free agent -- rumor is he had some good years with the Giants -- but the Giants failed to sign him out of high school over a difference of $5,000.

Late-round gem: Ken Griffey Sr. (29th round, 1969).

Bonds was notoriously hated by his teammates at ASU so it's not really that shocking teams passed on him.

It says out of high school
Bonds was coveted by the time he left ASU

They say Mike Piazza will be the lowest drafted player ever to enter the Hall of Fame.
He was the 1,390th pick, ahead of only five other players.

At one point his teammates voted to kick him off the team.
And he looked like this with a noodle arm.

I think the story behind him even getting drafted was because he was Tommy Lasorda’s godson, and he did it as a favor for Piazza’s father.

He was still skinny as a rookie:

his brother was Lasorda's godson

Cubs biggest miss never had the chance to come to fruition. But they had promised Carlos Correa they would draft him before Houston took him 1st & paid him below slot
They ended up with Albert Almora instead

Astros best draft pick probably Correa because he allowed them to also get mccullers. Aside from that maybe biggio.
Biggest miss... Drafted appel over Bryant. Nevin over Jeter.

Yep. That article would be even better if they added the biggest first round bust for each team.
I'd also like to see how the MLB equivalent of Mr. Irrelevant did each year.

John Elway, dude was also hyped up big-time as a baseball player at Stanford and when he played for the Yankees farm team, used his Yankees fallback as leverage to persuade the Colts to trade his draft rights dude's simply one of the great athletes of all-time

Braves wouldn’t likely have signed Maddux from the Cubs with a strong 3 rotation in place.

I wish ESPN did more well thought out, actually researched, articles like this

It’s fun to think about but I just don’t think it was that well researched. I mean how can you think a pitcher was the braves biggest miss in the amazing run covering most of the 90s and into the 00’s? Give me a 300 hitter or a 40 hr guy.

The "one who got away" for the A's doesn't make sense.
quote:
The one who got away: Tim Hudson (35th round, 1994). The A's made up for not signing Hudson by redrafting him three years later out of Auburn.
