As much as espn gets hate around here, there was a reason we were all a fan of it at one point. While riding out “hurricane” Barry on Saturday, I was watched LSU - Florida game (1997) on YouTube and it had very good production value. Here is some things I noticed(I watched every play, the halftime show with Torico, commercials)

1. The espn college football theme was superior back then
2. Great commentaries
3. Sideline reporting by Adrian Karsten(confirmed party animal...I saw him get wild at gold club one night)
4. The score ticker at :28 and :58 past the hour. It was quick and gets to the point. Just final scores, no players stats display. Minimal distraction from the actual game viewing experience.
5. Minimal commercial breaks. About 3 per quarter. At one point there was a sequence of injury, missed FG, change of possession...no commercials.
6. No illegal contact penalty. 1 defensive holding penalty. WRs not flickering their wrists at the refs asking for the charity flag after every incompletion. Good receivers can get open regardless of a little contact like in this game.
7. Celebration was minimal. Player makes a first down, everyone looks at the sideline for the next play. Someone makes a big play(turnover/TD)? He gets a hug from one or two team mates, pat on the butt/helmet as he’s walking back to the sideline. Men acted like men.
8. Doug Johnson took a beating.

Other things:
-FSU was playing Duke and there was a highlight where Peter Warrick caught the ball and surrounded by 7 duke players and he ran away from all of them. What a freak he was.

-Randy moss highlight of him tearing up MAC defense. Mike Gottfied said that a lot of people think Moss is the best receiver in college football but he “wasn’t sure about that”. Kind of funny.

-some serious magic in tiger stadium that night. The crowd was ALIVE.

Not sure how ESPN had anything to do with points 6, 7, and 8.

Maybe in the 1997 LSU-Florida game that was a thing, but that was the exception and not the rule back then just as it is now.

Except these are teenagers playing the game. Not men.

That's not a small amount. Most broadcasts have similar today except for CBS

Really is scary that those two could have been teammates. Along with Lavernious Coles

This is supposed to be entertainment, not a funeral procession. Lighten up, dawg. There are plenty of other things in life to take gravely seriously besides 19 year olds throwing a ball to each other.

Those are some good memories. And great points - especially the ticker at :28/:58. I agree seemed like such a better product overall. RIP Karsten.

I always wondered how much ESPN was paying him for that gig.
He was scheduled to report to prison for under reporting his income over a 2-3 year period by over $600,000. Was wondering if he just tried to conceal a portion of his salary or if he just said frick filing taxes.

Make America the 90s again except the part when mike archer, Curley hallman, and the end of Gerry dinardo era were coaching at LSU lol. Seriously those bring back a lot of great memories as a kid growing up.

That's because celebrations were insane in the 80s and they were cracking down hard in the 90s.

The biggest reason for the better production in the 90s is EPSN was more professional and took pride in a quality broadcast. Now they pander to minorities and turn every broadcast into a yo yo yo rap fest.

Except that game wasn’t a “funeral”. The fact that you need some guy to dance for you says a lot about yourself.

Sports is about a man or a group of men overcoming obstacles/challenges. It’s the one thing that transcends and appeal to men. Take that away and you got nothing.

So, take sports away, and you have nothing?

I don't care what anyone says but CFB was king in the 80's and celebration had a lot to do with it. It was a fun game.

Miami celebrating after every catch and Irvin throwing his hands in the air like he just won the National Championship was entertainment.

And that created a dichotomy - which is what fuels non-fans...buttoned-down Penn State vs. flashy gulf coast.

It's a part of the reason why its still the highest rated CFB MNC of all-time.

Nothing will beat 1980's CFB because you had Keith Jackson at the height of his powers and you had all Conferences that had a say and their moments in the 80's.

Miami, Georgia, Independent Penn State you had Notre Dame return to glory (which is always good for CFB), you had Clemson, Washington, USC, Oklahoma, FSU, Nebraska, Michigan...the top programs of the 80's and most of them historically.

1980's was the last decade where you didn't know who was going to win the MNC.

Then 90's became blocks...Nebraska/FSU, 2000's USC and Florida, 2010's Alabama and Clemson.
