Do you like the “new” NCAAT?
Posted by TexasTiger08

By new, I mean the more frequent upsets. We’ve had 15 over 2 three straight years, and all three went to the Sweet 16 at the least. 12 over 5 used to be the big thing, but one and done and the portal have accelerated the chaos.
There seems to be a different line of thinking between this and college football. In CFB, most fans seem to want the blue bloods, and the 2 best teams to meet in the title.
In CBB, you rarely have the two best teams meet for the title. I know several have posted on here about liking the upsets, but still wanting the big names and higher seeds in the Final Four. I love the madness, but I’m starting to lean that way as well.

A bad tournament is becoming more devalued with every upset.

Yes. The tournament format and everything about it is perfect
This is why I’m 100% confident the NCAA with frick with it and screw it up

It's great entertainment and a poor way to select a champion, but it's always been that way.
Not really unique though. Most sports are heading that direction with expanded playoffs. Gotta make that money.
I think the difference is there are way less people passionate about their school's basketball team and the tournament is the only reason they give a shite to begin with. They don't care about devaluing the regular season because they don't care about it at all.

I love the upsets, and I could give a crap about seeing the blue bloods win.

I'd much rather see the little guys win than see the same handful of teams in it over and over again

I just find it hard to get excited about college basketball at all. When they started the whole one and done stuff it ruined college basketball. There's no continuity in the teams, you can't get to really know or hate any of the teams like you could before they changed that rule. How lame would it have been if you'd have only gotten one year of Laetner's Duke teams or the UNLV teams or any of the other various great college teams before?

I think it's a fair topic.
I don't agree with the purists who scream about how it's not a meritorious way to crown a champ. It's very rare that the team that wins the NCAAT doesn't have a pretty strong claim to #1. We don't spend much time in the offseason bemoaning how some undeserving 6 seed brought home the title. I get the argument against it, but it just rarely provides unjust results.
But certainly we're getting upticks in the gravity of upsets and at some point there is going to be a risk that the chaos seems intentionally set up or it just devalues the tournament. It's always had a good mix of scarcity with enough regularity (5-12 for example) to make it exciting. But too much of a good thing and all that.

2022 Final Four (seed):
1,2,2,8 (North Carolina)
2021 Final Four (seed):
1,1,2,11 (UCLA)
2019 Final Four (seed):
1,3,2,5
2018 Final Four (seed):
1,3, 1, 11
2017 Final Four (seed):
1,1,3,7
1985 Final Four (seed):
1,1,2,8
1986 Final Four (seed):
1,1,2,11
1987 Final Four (seed):
1,1,2,6
1988 Final Four (seed):
1,1,2,6
1989 Final Four (seed):
1,2,3,3
1990 Final Four (seed):
1,3,4,4
You're still getting the big names and high seeds in the Final Four. In fact, the last two "underdogs" to crash the Final Four are two of the most prestigious programs in the history of the sport...UNC and UCLA. So even when you get upsets you are still getting the "big names" at the end. And outside of last year and 2014, you haven't had a championship game with one of the two teams higher than a 5 seed since 1992 when (1) Duke played (6) Michigan. Before then it was not terribly uncommon to see a "high" seed in the championship game:
1988 - Kansas (6)
1985 - Villanova (8)
1983 - NC State (6)
1980 - UCLA (8)
While there have been an unusual streak of 15 over 2 upsets recently, you are still getting mostly the best teams in the Final Four and championship games. You are perceiving the tournament through the lens of recently bias
EDT: I think what you are seeing is the line between major programs and mid-major programs becoming thinner.

That’s because any half way decent P5 school gets in. You want to make people care about college basketball again? Make the regular season matter way more than simply a 3 month long seeding resume exercise. What does it matter if Gonzaga lost to Alabama this year? It literally meant nothing in the scheme of the post season. No penalty and no real bump for Bama.

It's a terrible way to determine a champion and also fantastic entertainment.
College football is better, but it's even being diluted in two years. MLB has added teams to the playoff, as has the NFL. NBA and NHL have been diluted as long as I can remember.

It is objectively a great way to determine a champion. It is a poor way to find out who the best team is.

The tournament is the same
The top seeded teams are just a lot worse than they used to be

There’s probably not going to be a better argument in favor of the tournament than this statement from this person.

I agree, but the NBA rarely sees the 8-seed do major damage.
Off the top of my head, here are the 8-seeds to win a series:
2012 Philly over Chicago
2011 Memphis over SA
2007 Golden State over Dallas
1994 Denver over Seattle
I don’t think any went past round 2

Because they play a series, not single elimination. I love upsets, as long as it isn't my team getting upset.

Will be back to a normal amount of upsets in a year or two once COVID eligibility runs out.
