If he had been a rookie in MLB at 21, I truly believe he could have made a very serious run at Pete Rose's hits record.

Yeah, he ended up with more professional hits than Rose when you add in his Japanese League totals.

You can say the pitching and competition in Japan isn't on par with MLB, which is true, but they also played 130 games instead of 162 so Ichiro probably still would have gotten the same amount of hits over here.

ETA: Three True Outcomes has diminished the desire for contact hitters, I don't think teams tell them to avoid contact though

Peter Gammons just had an article on the Athletic about San Diego and KC looking to play more like the 80s Cardinals, stealing bases and valuing contact over strike outs. They feel that pitching is so good that they can get the pitchers out of rhythm by running and putting pressure on the defense. Pitchers have to be quicker to the plate and avoid spiking their sinkers/sliders in the dirt when there is a threat to steal.

But I think it’s player driven, not organizationally driven.

I agree with this Undertow. These days a lot of these guys have their own hitting guru's and barely pay attention to the team's designated hitting coach. Kris Bryant for example - his Dad is his hitting coach, I bet he rarely if ever consults the Cubs hitting coach. There's more of that type of thing going on than most realize.

Would have needed to average 195 hits had he been in MLB his age 21-26 seasons.... Rose had almost 1100 hits after turning 38, Ichiro had 600ish

Ironically the people he drafted during the money ball year were horrendous for the most part. They also rode their fantastic starting pitching to a playoff berth.
