thats another thing

when i go to the range, i typically hit balls, not practice

i have to force myself to put the same focus into each range ball as i would on a golf course

that is mentally taxing for a large bucket

I rarely have time to practice so when I get a day where I can get to the course, I end up playing. Hard to get the handicap down like that. 15 years ago I was down to a 4 but took about a 10 year break from the game. Now I'm around a 9 or 10; I can shoot 77 or 97 never know what game will show up. Practice is the one thing it takes to improve.

So true! I used to hit a bucket of balls and work my way from wedge to driver taking my time. I would then spend an hour on the putting green practicing putts and chipping. That really paid off for me back then but I had quit playing for a long time and dropped my club membership. Now I don't practice nearly as much but when I get the chance I spend more time working on the short game.

On the notion of practicing or hitting. When I go to range I mainly concentrate on slowing swing down and improving consistency of tempo. Does hitting off matts hinder the process?

The irons sound fine.

Perimeter weight and cavity back.

Old driver=small driver so there is definitely room for improvement there. But don't spend 300 bucks. Golf clubs are like college textbooks in their depreciation. Buy a club that is one year old or more. Whether new or used. You will find something perfectly acceptable that's price is cut in half.

Maybe not a huge difference, but I'm a pretty high cap and I know I don't hit hard golf balls, like e6's and e7's real well. I know I hit softer balls like Callaway Hexes better.

I've always had the same old Nike CPR irons from many moons ago.

With all due respect, please explain. I find that when i try to mash i.e. swing harder/faster is when my ball striking goes to crap. Thanks.

IMO a high handicapper will not get the benefit of a better set of clubs or balls. Until you have a fairly consistent swing the clubs will not matter much. If you get fitted for a new set of irons the pro will suggest clubs for your current crappy swing. If you then take lessons and improve your swing a different set of irons might be better for your new swing.

Getting fit for A ball is almost as important as getting fit for clubs.

Under no circumstance should a high handicapper use one if the high end ball lines.

When you slow down your swing you are "aiming" the shot instead of hitting the shot. Once you do not hit the shot you want, it will not happen. The golf swing is built around three basic principles...

1. Stance/Posture
2. grip
3. Raw...Nasty...Bad arse speed
(there are a few other advanced stages of the swing also)

you can correct something that is wrong with a swing with speed. Not to be confused with swinging harder, swinging with speed is the sequence of events that happen between the hips, shoulders, hands and feet during a swing that produce a un-hindered rotation after the backswing! slowing down your swing will cause more problems simply because you are giving the club more time to act up.

the less time your club has to do something it's not supposed to, the better!

No.

However, the types of irons high handicappers play can make a difference. For instance, if they are playing with blades or muscle backs, they'd shoot lower with game improvement irons.

But the answer for you is no.
