The university says UL Lafayette in academia. UL is an athletic thing, same with Cal-Berkeley and other universities.

It's only ever referred to as "Cal" when it comes to sports. If you referred to it as "California" to a bunch of people who don't watch sports, they would ask you which school.
In academic circles, it's "UC Berkeley", "Berkeley", or "Cal-Berkeley". It's the same with UT-Austin.

Same thing in the sense that the academic side of the university doesn't push the state thing. It's mostly an athletic thing.

Dont know why, but when I see UL I dont think "University of Louisiana" I think "University of Lafayette". Not a criticism, its just what I immediately think of when I see it.

UL is a thing that fans say mostly. The athletic department says "Louisiana" which still makes LSU fans mad so it's good with me.

I get why they do it. Michigan-Michigan State, Florida-Florida State, North Carolina-North Carolina State. I just dont think it will ever really catch on outside of Lafayette.
