The clash between Deadspin.com staffers and management over an edict for the website to “stick to sports” came to a head Tuesday when its writers did everything but that and a longtime editor was fired.

quote:

“Where such subjects touch on sports, they are fair game for Deadspin. Where they do not, they are not,” wrote Paul Maidment, G/O Media’s editorial director. “We have plenty of other sites that write about politics, pop culture, the arts, and the rest, and they’re the appropriate place for such work.”

quote:

The staff responded Tuesday by posting older stories atop the site that had little or nothing to do with sports, including one from former editor Megan Greenwell titled “The Adults In The Room” that eviscerated G/O Media. Newer stories posted throughout the afternoon included “It’s Absolutely Fine That Donald Trump Got Booed At The World Series’’ and “Three Good Dogs I Met.”

Later Tuesday, the site was updated with several old sports stories, including one criticizing Browns coach Freddie Kitchens for his coaching job against the Patriots Sunday.

Those posts fit the type of quirky, wry stories Deadspin posts on a normal day. But it was clear the staffers were thumbing their noses at the edict if not pulling an outright revolt.

quote:

Maidment, G/O Media’s editorial director, issued a statement to CNN saying, “Yesterday I sent a memo to Deadspin staff stating that our sports site should be focused on sports coverage. As I made clear in the note, sports touches on nearly every aspect of life — from politics to business to pop culture and more.

“We believe that Deadspin reporters and editors should go after every conceivable story, as long as it has something to do with sports. We are sorry that some on the Deadspin staff don’t agree with that editorial direction and refuse to work within that incredibly broad mandate.”

Deadspin is being very childish and I'm going to agree with most of the people I argue with on here.

I think it is acceptable to report on the relationships between sports and culture. But Deadspin went too far and ignored their mission. After the election, they went too far by linking and giving prominence to articles that absolutely nothing to do with sports from their sister sites. I go to a sports website like Deadspin to get snarky coverage and analysis of sports, not a daily evisceration of Republican lawmakers. Ted Cruz and Mitch McConnell generally have nothing to do with sports. If I want to read articles trashing them, I'll go to news or politics websites.

And then when they "stuck to sports," they were so myopic in their sports coverage. They reported on THEIR favorite teams and didn't seem to give a shite anymore on what the audience wanted. Every day there were 3-4 stories about the Mets, Knicks and Jets. We. Don't. Care. It would not be right if I took over as editor of a national news site and then all of the sudden there were half a dozen stories daily about the Saints and LSU.

Anyway, just my two cents nobody wanted.

I honestly don't know much about Deadspin.

It may be a dumb business decision, but if your bosses tell you to write about sports only, you write about sports only or go find a new job.

If you don't follow those orders, you really don't have much to whine about when you're fired IMO.

the problem is these people have a mindset that they're saving the world or some shite, so "getting a new job" is "giving up" or "turning their back on social justice" and then the martyr complex kicks in (as well as all the short term incentives of being a martyr for social justice)

then after that high wears off, they report people for tweeting "learn to code" at them as they try to figure out where (overpriced) rent is going to come from (b/c of course they live in super urban, super expensive hubs for the prestige)

Deadspin was always the sarcastic, snarky sports website, and they broke some pretty big stories, like the Manti Teo ridiculouslness.

For the last 4-5 years, they went full on Trump Derangement Syndrome. Every story was connected to some leftist crap. It was a bizarre turn.

As a result, they have lost significant views.

It's ridiculous that writers for Deadspin feel so entitled that they can tell their new boss to frick off and then get mad at any repercussions. If you don't like the new direction of the once sports website returning to being a sports website, then find a new fricking job.

Learn to code.

Staff thought they would call the owners bluff and they found out the owner wasn’t playing when he cut the head off the snake

fricking idiots didn't know that that was actually PFTs brother who died.

It’s a predictable progression that happens. These idiots think they are making some great stand against “insert micro aggression of the day”. They get a few people that chirp at them and applaud them on Twitter. They proceed to get fired. Post more snarky shite on Twitter. Then end up realizing that support from some woke robots on twitter won’t pay the bills.

I don’t get why wags, the green monster (NOT because of her looks), Barry, samer, etc don’t start their own employee owned co-op website and write about whatever they want

Surely it would be successful

Like Portnoy said, they are a for profit website. If they tell you that you can/can't write about something and you do otherwise you deserve to get fired, simple as that. If I was talking shite about one of our vendors and our owner heard me I'm assuming I would get canned.

Thanks Portnoy!

That's exactly what he said in an interview someone linked in another thread.

The most recent article posted to Deadspin is nearly 24 hours old. It's a sad, pathetic end if it's the end.

guarantee you that we could take 4-5 posters from the MSB and split 3 salaries and do part time work that would be fine for deadspin

what i'm saying is, is that i doubt it's dead, even if they have to fire everyone

I was an occasional commenter on Deadspin but they banned me after the election.

I got fed up with the "Trump beat Clinton because white people are racist and sexist" stories. I commented that Democrats lost the election because they were too smug and cocky and rigged the nomination process, and refused to let the candidate that the people wanted win even though he won the primaries because they were were more concerned with electing a woman than presenting the best candidate (which is something I truly believe). And all of that turned out to be true after the DNC had to dump Donna Brazile.

When they went from sports to culture, I stopped reading. So did most people.

This isn’t even political it’s business.

G/O didn’t buy Deadspin for political content.
