Daytona 500 overnight TV ratings likely the worst in race’s history
LINK

quote:

Declining television ratings have been a near-constant part of the NASCAR conversation for years. Based on the overnight rating for the circuit’s marquee event, that chatter won’t be ending anytime soon. Sunday’s Daytona 500 drew a 5.1 overnight rating on Fox, which Sports Business Daily’s Austin Karp reports is likely a record low. It’s down 22 percent from the overnight rating scored by the 2017 edition, down 16 percent from 2016 and down 30 percent from 2015. Karp points out that the Olympics probably cannot be used as an excuse here, considering the race fared better the previous time it went up against the Winter Games.

So it did better than the Olympics compared to the last time they went head to head yet its a record low?

No Danica, no care apparently.

Or the fact that it's a 500 mile left turn.

The NBA all-star game ratings were down compared to last year, but up compared to the last time they went against the Olympics (2014)

It seems like every major TV event is declining in ratings except the NBA...

No. 5.1 this year compared to 5.6 in 2014.

From the article:

Karp points out that the Olympics probably cannot be used as an excuse here, considering the race fared better the previous time it went up against the Winter Games.

I haven't watched a NASCAR event in years. I wouldn't even have known the race was happening if it wasn't for twitter. I don't have any friends who are really into it, at least not anymore.

Was it that long ago that NASCAR ratings were booming? I think Jimmie Johnson’s success and the corporate feel to the sport has turned many staunch followers off.

I don’t watch anymore.

Too many unfamiliar names.

They have abandoned their southern roots and taken the series to tracks that no one cares about. I miss the North Wilkesboros and Rockinghams instead of all of these damn cookie-cutter ovals like Kansas and Chicago.

Well, I am all for them expanding their brand, but, you’re right, they don’t view the southeast as a priority where the sport originated from.

Between all the commercials and DW's constant jabbering, it's almost hard to watch now.

This, every time I end up clicking on a race I always end up asking myself who the hell are these guys.

I miss the days of Gordon, Stewart, and Jr.

That's not what it said at all.

It did better the last time it was against the Olympics.

They forced the #3 car to the winners circle with some cheap arse dick move that would have gotten an arse beating 10 years ago.

Instead, we get to celebrate that it's been 20 years since Dale Earnhardt won the Daytona 500. Half the fans never even saw a Dale Earnhardt race, let alone care that the #3 won.

The fact that Austin Dillon didn't get his arse kicked after putting Amirola into the wall on the final turn shows how much naacar has fallen.

NBA and MLB have been pretty solid in ratings the last two years. The biggest problem in nascar is all the big names that carried the sport are all gone. In team sports you will always have the team when great players move on. NASCAR has to create new fan favorites and it hasn’t happened over the years. NASCAR was amazing in the late 90s to mid 20s. I don’t think the sport will ever touch those days again.
