Same podcast...They wanted a veteran catcher to pair with Maldonado. They understand Vasquez is a starter so Maldonado in theory would catch JV and Valdez, Vazquez the others. They want Mancini in LF and 1B. Click also said they couldn't get a CF for what they were willing to part with.

I think (not looking it up) it was lower until maybe Lee's second to last start? Point is, Odorizzi was able to throw 7 shutout innings with a rookie back there. Maldy is not some pitcher whisperer who cannot be replaced.

But they were never giving him a 4-year deal since he'll turn 37 by the end of it. We can complain about that policy but it's not going to change.
