Would be pretty cool to get this one today and not have Seattle gain all three games right back because the wittle babies don't wanna play hard in that empty cavernous shithole in Oakland.

I’d really like to see us in on a Ben Gamel type, even just as an insurance policy and potential bench bat. Wouldn’t be expensive at all, can have a quality AB, somewhat passable in CF

Naquin would be another option

7) Astros: Time to load up for October

Proposed deal: Acquire 1B Josh Bell from Nationals for RHP José Urquidy, RHP Peter Solomon (Astros’ No. 6 prospect) and OF Wilyer Abreu (No. 29)

They love Yuli Gurriel in Houston, so it would be tough to relegate the veteran first baseman to a part-time role. But Gurriel, who won the AL batting title last year and caught the final out of the 2017 World Series at first base for the Astros, has struggled at the plate this season. In his age-38 campaign and in the last year of his current contract, he’s hitting .234/.287/.384 with seven homers in 345 plate appearances.

Enter Bell, who is having a big year at the plate for Washington. The switch-hitting first baseman is hitting .302/.388/.492 (a career-best 153 OPS+) with 13 home runs. Do the Astros need Bell? That’s debatable. But the fact that it’s debatable is why it would make sense to make a deal for him.

What do we think about this proposed trade?

@JeffPassan

Yankees are showing interest in acquiring Oakland's entire roster. A statement move targeting an ALCS rematch with the Astros.

Hearing the Yankees covet Oakland's Tony Kemp and Elvis Andrus. Rival execs say pair doesn't move the needle but Yankees who hit just .150 v. Astros believe this could be key to beating them in post season

I wouldn't give up Urquidy for Bell unless it's a last resort. Have to ask about Walker and Cooper before making that move.

I would be pretty pissed if the Astros traded away a legit middle of rotation arm for a rental. That price feels entirely too high

Yeah if that’s what the Nats require you move to someone else

Agreed. And I feel like other than for Soto and Contreras this is a buyer's market.

It’s definitely flipped more toward that with Boston and Miami fully open to selling I think

Passan posted a pitchers edition of what he did yesterday which had an interesting tidbit

quote:

One surprising entrant in the category: Houston, which, multiple general managers said, has expressed a willingness to trade from what clearly has been a strength. The Astros currently have six quality major league starting pitchers -- Justin Verlander, Framber Valdez, Cristian Javier, Luis Garcia, Jake Odorizzi and Jose Urquidy. Lance McCullers Jr. is on a rehabilitation assignment and looked excellent in his first start back. And Hunter Brown, a right-hander dominating at Triple-A, is, in the words of one scout, "a real dude." The Astros, then, have plenty of options, so Urquidy is the most obvious candidate to move. He is 27 years old, is playoff tested and boasts a career 3.69 ERA over 52 games. He'll reach arbitration this winter and would slot in with any big league rotation. Javier, in the midst of a breakout season, and Garcia, who isn't due to hit free agency until after the 2026 season, would cost the most out of anyone in this category in return.

Aside from Odorizzi (lol), I wouldn’t want to deal any of the above unless it’s bringing back a better controllable starter (Castillo, Pablo Lopez, Skubal) or a truly elite controllable bat (Soto is really the only guy in this to me and that’s not happening)

And Detroit, who were always sellers, is now dangling Skubal which expands the SP market.

Plus the Indians are looking at trading Plesac and Civale and the Marlins have put Pablo Lopez on the block.

Yeah, getting someone like Skubal, Lopez, or Castillo would be great. Or Soto obviously, but I don't think that's going to happen. The Nats are going to want Garcia, Chas, Brown, Barber, and Leon.

One wild card though... Ohtani. He only has one more year left, but I would give up one of those SPs and a few high prospects for the arm/bat combo.

Well sure. I don’t see Ohtani getting dealt, and if he does we aren’t getting him.
