Dusty Baker, one of the most successful managers in baseball history, informed Houston owner Jim Crane in a private meeting Tuesday afternoon that he is retiring as manager of the Astros.
A press conference has been scheduled for Thursday at noon ET at Minute Maid Park, where Baker is expected to publicly announce his decision.
quote:
Baker still wants to remain involved in baseball in an advisory position with a team, either the Astros or a team closer to his Sacramento, California, home. Yet after managing for 26 seasons, he is done, leaving the Astros on his own terms.
quote:
“I’ve still got a lot to offer; baseball has been my life,’’ said Baker, who also spent 19 years in the big leagues as an All-Star outfielder. “I have a lifetime of knowledge, much more than those who have never played the game.’’
Oh boy

It won't matter who the manager is if crane remains the GM.

Imagine being a young stat nerd in the analytics department that has to report your findings to Bagwell, Dusty, and Reggie Jackson.

Your time would be better served making paper airplanes all day. Because that's what they're gonna do with your work.

Talk about pissing in man’s corn flakes. That’s worse than him being manager.

Most, if not all, of us were willing to sacrifice a playoff berth this year if it meant Dusty was gone. I was among that number, but gone has to be GONE.

So the findings of our statistical analysis data set of the 2023 home offense using an r-squared coefficient, indicates a more than 13% loss year over year of swing efficiency on pitches located in what we call the "slam zone". After we converted the swing videos from raw high speed camera video into a 3D model of swing planes, we experimented with the hand placement of the model swings. After more than 30,000 simulation runs, the model output a 27% increase in swings resulting In a positive outcome. We found that the minor shift in hand placement resulted in a 3 degree shift in launch angle which could be the difference in a pop up and well hit flyball. We're confident that if we can bridge this data to our hitting coaches,it'll solve our home woes.
Bagwell:
No. No. Absolutely not ok. You didn't play baseball. Your Macintosh didn't play baseball. And we're not telling our players to listen to some computer game. We're gonna hit the ball Harder and we're going to hit home runs.
