Wasn't sure if anyone had seen this, but posting it here for those interested (I know we have some pretty big Jr. fans on the board). Great, great longform interview in the Joe Rogan style. Don't get this sort of introspective every day.
Interview hit me kinda weird/hard. I was never a Junior fan (in fact, during his heyday I absolutely hated his fanbase, as a Jeff Gordon fan myself), but there was a lot of nostalgia there for me. I feel like I did a lot of my own personal maturing through some events between '99 and '01 (11-13 years old). Punctuated by the A&M Bonfire collapse in '99 (my dad worked on that when he was a student--when he got the news, that was the first time in my life I'd ever seen him cry). Then, of course, living on a military installation when 9/11 happened left a huge impression on me. The Daytona 500 that took Dale Sr's life was earlier that year, of course, and to this day it's the first and only race my dad watched with me in its entirety. Guess I just felt like I learned a lot about the finality of death and the importance of enjoying life during those years.
Even though I wasn't a Junior fan, you never forget the guys your childhood heroes battled. So now I hear names like Tony Stewart, Dale Jr., etc., and it piques my interest and brings back a ton of memories. Some of my favorite Gordon (and Johnson) victories come from defeating Junior and his crew at the restrictor plate tracks. You knew what they were up against to win there, so those were the sweetest for me as a fan. My all-time favorite Gordon picture is him doing burnouts in his Pepsi shards car at Talladega over beer cans Junior fans had angrily thrown on the track when the race finished under caution with Gordon leading
I still follow NASCAR today, but it's different when your favorite driver hangs 'em up (hell, it's different watching my Spurs now that Manu has retired). Junior's unquestionably a good dude, and while he may have inherited his fans because of his dad's passing, that wasn't his fault--he kept them because of his own personality. The sport misses him. Hell, even I miss seeing him out there, crazy as it is for me to admit that
This photo will forever be my favorite NASCAR pic. One of my favorite sports photos of all time:
Sorry for the long post--like I said, it put me in a weird mood

AIn't even mad. I was a fan growing up as my pops was in the business for a little bit and I was especially into it during the 'boom' years. Big JG24 and Hendricks Motor sports fan as well. After I returned from deployment and got life going again it had changed a lot. I couldn't name 5 drivers now and it just doesn't pique my interest at ALL. But man them boom years rivalries were some fun times.

I was already kinda thinking about NASCAR today I guess. My folks just moved to Pennsylvania this past summer and are pretty close to Pocono. They visited the track today and sent me pics.
Fun times in the mid 00's indeed

Great post, have an upvote. JR will always be my favorite driver. Nascar was the best in the mid 2000's IMO. I'd get home from school and go immediately to Speed tv to watch practices and qualifying and would then end the night with trackside live. No real social media back then so Friday-Sunday was the only times I could get my nascar fix. Talladega races were like a twice annual holiday for me.
This video kind of hit me in the feels when JR retired, Budweiser makes some good commercials... One last ride

Say what you want but his dad Senior Dale? Was the Goat. Well could also argue and say Petty.

We're probably a very similar age and I grew up on a military base during 9/11 as well. We went to my uncles every year on President's Day weekend for the Daytona 500 to do a crawfish boil. I remember the early 2000's Daytona 500's like it was yesterday.
Like you, every now and then I'll see a sports moment that takes me back in time. It's a weird feeling. They were such defining moments and people as a kid. As an adult, you realize a lot of things are more important but you sort of long for those naive moments of the past.

The most powerful sport8ng event I’ve ever attended was the Pepsi 400 in 2001 Absolutely unreal. You could feel that Jr was going to win. It was in the air. It made mr a Jr fan even though I coulndnt stand hid dad.

I listened to the first half of the interview yesterday and it was great. A previously scheduled work meeting interrupted my listening but planning on finishing it tomorrow. JRE always has great interviews, I've really enjoyed this one so far.

It'll always be the "Pepsi 400" for me in my mind; in large part because of that '01 race.
I mean....winning his first trip back to the scene of his dad's death? And Waltrip joining him in the infield to join in the celebration he got robbed of in the 500?
Fuuuuuuuck that's some heavy shite right there.

I've never been a big fan of his (he's fine), but I have always respected the hell out of Junior because he's an interesting person, has intelligent things to say, and is a very decent human being.
I'm glad he went to the booth and he's worked out great for NBC Sports.

Amazing commercial. As a Junior fan, it gets me in the feels also.
Too bad Theresa couldn’t stop being an evil, vindictive bitch for one day so Budweiser could give Junior a proper tribute video. That cold-hearted c.u.n.t wouldn’t allow Budweiser to show the number 8 on the car. Bud had to blur the number out
They also weren’t allowed to use any images of Senior. As you see, they never show Senior’s face in the commercial.
What a bitch

Damn, that one last ride video got to me, man.
