Now the second highest paid coach in CFB based on annual salary.

quote:

Clemson’s Board of Trustees approved a new contract for Swinney Friday morning. It is a 10-year deal that will pay him an average annual salary of $9.3 million.

Swinney is now the second-highest paid coach in the country in terms of annual salary. Alabama’s Nick Saban is first at $9.44 million.

Contract also has buyout language specific to Alabama

quote:

Swinney’s contract also includes a buyout enhancement if he leaves to become the head coach at Alabama.

His buyout is $4 million through December 31, 2020, $3 million in 2021-2022, $2 million in 2023-2025 and $1 million in 2026-2027.

If Swinney leaves for Alabama the buyout jumps to $6 million through December 31, 2020, $4.5 million in 2021-2022, $3 million in 2023-2025 and $1.5 million in 2026-2027.

Probably worth twice that, just like Saban is.

Kirk Ferentz looks at this type of news and says to himself "I wonder if I can go 4-8 and get the BoS at Iowa to give me a bonus."

$93 million? Jesus Christ, that's a lot of money. We might end up seeing successful NFL coaches making a Harbaugh like move to college football the way these salaries are heading.

Smart move
What is buyout?
If he can go head to head with Saban and win two national titles you know he will be Bama's first call
At that age, he could surpass all the greats once Saban hangs it up for good.

As of 2017, he has the largest buyout in college football.

quote:

He is one of merely four active coaches with a national championship. According to figures compiled by USA Today Sports, Swinney also is one of five coaches earning more than $6 million.

Swinney’s total compensation in 2017 is $8,526,800, second in the NCAA Division I bowl subdivision. Swinney trails Alabama’s Nick Saban, who earned $11.13 million.

Swinney’s compensation package includes the $1.5 million bonus he received in August after signing an eight-year, $54 million contract in August. It was a reward for leading Clemson to the College Football Playoff national championship against Saban and Alabama in January.

The new agreement was also an accord avowing long-term commitment. Clemson and Swinney negotiated the largest buyout clause in college football.

If Clemson dismisses Swinney without just cause before the end of the contract, the school must pay him $5 million for each remaining year. Thus, if Clemson fired Swinney this year, it would owe him $40,000,000.

Zero chance I would agree to this if I was Clemson. Make him make a stand on that

I’m not one to say you should start a media war with your coach but if he’s demanding that he gets an out for Bama, I would want my fans to know that before I signed him to that

Am I reading his buyout wrong? Doesn't it go up if he leaves for Alabama?
