re: Create your own playoff format for the NCAA
It’s simple.

Go back to bcs rankings
Eliminate conference champ games
5 conference champs get auto bids and three at large

Simple no need to over complicate it

How are conference champions determined? What if there are four G5 champions?

1. The same way they have always been determined. Something I have no issue with

The rules for determining are made clear to everyone at the start, go win your conference. It's very cut and dry

2. If there somehow were more than 3 undefeated G5 teams, which I'm pretty sure has NEVER happened not even once, you could allow for a way for them to be ranked. Once again, a poll, a computer ranking, a commitiee, whatever you wanted

Once we get down to the 4th best undefeated G5 team, I feel pretty confident we haven't snubbed the best team in the nation

So conferences do whatever they want and game your system. Yep, same as before.

So a committee or polls or whatever determines who looks better.

Again, same as before.

re: Create your own playoff format for the NCAA
The commitiee would determine it ONLY if there were more than 3 undefeated teams from outside the power 5 conferences

Has that EVER happened before? It would be a once in a lifetime scenario

As far as your first comment, I don't have any issue with how conference championships are determined now though I should've included to have an auto bid a conference should be required to play a championship game

OK, what about one loss teams? What about teams that played stronger OOC opponents? You're going to compare just the win/loss of teams from different conferences? We could just do that now.

I don't know, but the college football postseason is full of firsts.

That's certainly an improvement.

re: Create your own playoff format for the NCAA
I kinda feel like you, and a lot of other ppl, are looking for some perfect solution when the fact of the matter is that there is no perfect solution in the real world and even if there was the chances of the jackasses in charge implementing it are slim to none

You asked about 1 loss teams, at that point we are talking about a 1 loss team from a non power 5 conference. I feel totally comfortable leaving them out, I'm sorry we can't just include everyone but as I said before it isn't feasible

As far as OOC opponents I think my system would just encourage teams to play a tougher schedule. For instance this year Auburn wouldn't have to worry about the loss to Clemson costing them the postseason. Even with that loss it doesn't inhibit their ability to win the SEC Championship so why not play the game to try to improve seed?

Anyways I looked for a bit earlier and it appears that having more than 3 non power 5 undefeateds hasn't ever happened or came very close

Lots of great ideas in this thread about tearing apart rivalries and watering down the regular season just so we can pacify teams that traditionally have never had an argument to be the top team in the country.

There’s no perfect system out there for college football unless you want to fundamentally change the sport.

re: Create your own playoff format for the NCAA
8 teams

5 conference champions (after CCGs)
3 at large bids
Zero autoqualifiers from non power five schools (they are still eligible, if ranking permits)

Let some mid/upper tier bowls host the first round... semi finals and championship can be laid out like it is now (sugar, rose, etc followed by championship game)

This bowl season, all of the games sucked except for the playoffs and maybe the exception of 1/2 other games... the more meaningful games that are played, the better it is for the fans.

Not sure if the logistics would work out in this scenario, but I feel this would be the best way to end the CFB season

I feel like it would be the exact same controversy and complaints, except probably more.

- Still no undefeated UCF
- Instead of just OSU/Bama complaining about the final spot now the fight is between Auburn/USC/Penn St/Miami/Washington fighting for 2 spots.

You can’t use one year as proof or disproof for this conversation

Most years, nobody outside of the top 8 should be considered title contenders come playoff time

I could say the same thing about top 4. If you're in the position to even maybe not be in the top 4, you don't have a right to bitch about being left out, so 4 is good.

So you’d leave the format as-is?

I'd prefer a selection being done by a total of all relevant computer rankings, but I don't really need 8 teams, 4 is fine.

My main point is everyone says "here's my 8 team idea" and points out how it's so much better and solves this and that. You can like your idea, that's no problem. But you or whoever has an idea...it doesn't really solve much of anything and anything it does solve, it probably creates a new set of issues that leave us in the same boat we're in now.

As long as we can concede that point, then we're good.

8 teams
Don't care how many from what conference, as long as it's the best 8.

First round games are played on higher seed's home field.
Semi finals and Championship played like they are now.

I'm not for 8 but if it goes to 8, that would be arguably the best way to do it IMO.

I'm alright with conference winners as long as conference championships are taken out. 2 upsets in conference championship games then you have an undeserving team playing for a nc.

Not a fan.

2 of the best 4 teams can be in the same conference.
