College Basketball is dying

The nation's #1 HS recruit Jalen Green out of California is expected to go pro instead of picking one of his two final college options Memphis or Auburn. LINK
This would mark the 2nd straight year the #1 recruit has missed most (or all in this case) of their lone college season with James Wiseman only playing a few games for Memphis this past year. Over the past ten years only 2 #1 overall recruits have played in the Final Four (Anthony Davis and Jahlil Okafor) and several missed the NCAA Tournament altogether (James Wiseman, Michael Porter, Harry Giles, Ben Simmons, Nerlens Noel). If this trend of top players missing CBB continues I can see what has already become a niche sport losing relevance even more quickly.
Also, the most heralded prospect in HS Hoops today is a 10th grader from Michigan named Emoni Bates. Bates recently became the 1st sophomore to ever win Gatorade National Player of the Year. Bates said shortly after winning the award that he would also bypass college if the opportunity presents himself. So you can already count another #1 overall prospect who will likely miss college bball.

It’s not dying it’s just going back to the way it was in the 90’s when HS phenoms picked the NBA instead of college

one and done is stupid. either go back to letting them go straight to the NBA or make them stay in college for 3 years like football.

Yea, having great players like Zion play 1 year of college instead of 0 really sucks...

You'll really see how dead it is when college football is played in the Spring semester.

I mean this isnt news. He was always expected to go pro. And it's a good thing we are seeing this more and more

Yeah, this has been expected for years with Green.
I actually think college basketball interest qould be higher without one and done. One of the things hurting interest is players being in constant transition. If players who didn't want to go to college didn't have a one year pit stop, fans would get more roster stability.
Instead of just rooting for a new group every year, you get more rooting for multi-year players.

Why should that change fans rooting for their schools though?
You root for your school not the players, who cares if the roster turns over every year

Dunno, I've noticed some LSU fans are fond of Joe Burrow.

Yea but they’re not gonna stop rooting for the school they went to or grew up following because one guy goes pro

Let the kid go pro. I never liked one and done anyways and hope the NBA allows HS’s to get drafted sooner rather than later.

They do the same thing college baseball does. You can go out of high school or 2-3 years in college

College basketball fans aren't either. The issue is with declining attendance and viewership.
College football is having attendance issues as well. Right now, it's good to have maximum reasons for fans to connect with a team. Not because they'll stop rooting for their college, but because you want eyes on the game and butts in seats.

True.
I think also that could deal with everyone just not giving a frick till the tourney.

They ain’t come to play school

College baseball has the best rules as far as staying in college.

I would argue the exact opposite. The more of these pro-caliber players that go directly to the pros, the better it is for college basketball.

What a dumb headline
