He is a great recruiter and salesman, but he is not a good coach. Yes his team is yearly almost all freshmen, but this is his excuse every year. Is UK tired if him or is he the best for them?

Every year.

Every year.

He's a great recruiter, but a below average gameday coach. We see that time and time again, year after year.

I'm not sure what the answer is. You have to recruit the best players, even if you will only have them a year.

Losing 4-5 starters every year makes the early season the next year difficult for fans.

Oh, and overall yes, we should have at least 5 titles in the last 11 years, and we have one.

He embraced the one and done mentality and it's cost him
You win a lot of games but it has not translated to national titles
You need veterans that can adapt to the craziness the tourney brings you every year

Duke hasn't had much success either with the one and dones once Coach K went all in as well

Look at the successful teams like Villanova and Virginia
It's why the mid majors are so good now too like Gonzaga and Creighton and Wichita St
They have veteran crafty players that can win a lot of games.

I'm not a UK fan...at all...but I've learned to not make rash judgments about them early in the season. Cal has proven more times than not he can figure out his teams as the season goes along. From what I have seen, this team has tremendous length and should be really, really good defensively in about a month or so. The lack of a reliable PG is hurting them right now when you add that to the fact they can't hit a three. Still, Nov/Dec Kentucky often looks VERY different from March Kentucky.

As much as I dislike Cal, he's proven himself time and time again.

I think what Wade is doing seems like a nice balance, you bring in guys like Smart and Days that are 3-4 year players that become experienced leaders and productive players. And then sprinkle in a one and done like Naz Reid, Watford(he could have gone last year, I think Covid messed him up) and likely Cam Thomas. Guys we have brought in like Cook this season fall into the 3-4 year guy category.

This is also true. His teams gel as the season’s go on. He also does a good job of getting super highly rated guys to “buy in” and accept their role on the team, though it may be much more limited than it would be a lot of other places.

I think quite the opposite. This happens every year and somehow a team full of green players who sucked early in the year finish the season as a top 10ish team (except for 1 year basically). That tells me he's a fantastic coach, honestly.

Freshmen struggle to shoot the 3pt shot in college. I don't have stats to back this up but it is easy to see by watching enough of the sport. The college 3pt line being deeper than it is in HS contributes a ton to this. The undoing of these teams full of superstar freshmen is when they have a cold shooting night in the tournament like Zion's Duke team did against Michigan State.

Only five coaches in the history of the sport have more final four appearances than him. Not overrated.

Meh...he has flaws as a game day coach, sure. He also gets UK to improve and at least get back in final 4 hunt in March. They also are breaking in guys each year so it takes time to gel.

Izzo drops a ton of these early games (and don't always look good) but they get better as the year goes along before making a run.

Cal is still an excellent coach.

What Cal has a UK reminds me a lot of what LSU has right now with their NFLSU pitch.

Two programs that advertise their ability to get their guys to the league and that works in regards to the team being consistently competitive, but like we’ve seen with LSU this year and in other years it’s rare it turnstone team into a consistent champion.

I also don’t think Cal is overrated. He fields a good almost every year, it’s just really hard to win a championship.

Yeah. I would guess even more difficult this year, since they didn't have summer camps and stuff and there was just a lot of uncertainty surrounding the season.

They'll get better as the season goes along like always, but I'm not sure they'll be able to make up enough ground to be legit contenders.
