Clemson has made the difficult decision to discontinue the Men's Track and Field and Cross Country program at the conclusion of the 2020-21 athletic year.
an obvious casualty of COVID & loss of revenue due to it

Only the beginning
You better hope full football stadiums are back next season or it's going to be worse
You better hope for a full NCAA tourney in the spring

These sports have to be a drop in the bucket, right? How much could they cost?

I'm nervous to see what college athletics will look like in five to ten years. It might consist of only football and basketball.

In all honesty its actually very likely to cost the university as a whole more money than athletics is saving. Alot of those kids arent on scholarship and the ones that are arent on much. You maybe have 2-3 kids pulling in full ride money one any given team. Track teams are usually pretty big (between men and women) so travel budgets can be expensive depending on how coaches handle that (how many athletes go to what meets). Clemson hosted meets as well which im sure ate a good chunk of that budget.

Ironically, a lot of the pro runners I follow were furious on social media about how no one was taking covid seriously and how more precautions needed to be taken. And now that their sports are the first ones on the chopping block they're crying about "how could this happen" and sharing petitions to save the teams. Too bad.

Clemson are not a broke athletic department. I fear that giant haircuts are forthcoming if CLEMSON are cutting teams.
This could be the reckoning that takes some of the money out of college sports. It will probably even the playing field.

Cross Country...probably way less than the kiddy slide in the Football center

Yep, one horrible future is Olympic sports only survive at private schools where half the team is kids with parents wealthy enough to pay tuition which then directly funds a handful of need-based scholarship athletes. So maybe a legal version of what happened with the full house woman.

NCAA membership requires participation in 14 sports.
7 men sports and 7 women sports (can go 6-8 with football) and must have at least two team sports for each gender.

I’m hearing LSU is preparing for a $160M budget shortfall over the next 3 years due to COVID
Most athletic departments are heavily leveraged paying loans on shiny new facilities
Most have also taken loans to cover losses from this year

Not that Clemson football doesn't rake in money that supports all the lesser sports but I think at some point we're going to see a political campaign against the disparities that exist between college football and the other sports.
Clemson football players are living the life of excess in a $55 million football facility that caters to their every need while the track and field programs get cut and athletes lose their chance at a college education because of budget cuts.
Like I said, football rakes in that money. They're the life blood of the entire athletics department but I'd almost guarantee we see liberal politicians get involved with the lectures of equity and equal outcomes.

A better solution than dropping sports would be to use conferences for football only and maybe basketball.
It makes sense for Texas Tech to go to Morgantown for a football game. Sending Temple to New Orleans for a volleyball game, not so much.
Have nonrevenue sports play for a state championship. Then the state champs go to a regional that covers 6-8 states. Then the regional champs play for the natty.
That way there are no travel costs.
