I regretfully think he was vastly overrated. Injuries were a problem and I realize this, but the guy was no Cal Ripken Jr. like lots of folks from the South would have you believe.

Funny how people of today only live in the now or most recent.

Chipper Jones is not "vastly overrated"

He was the one rock on offense on a team that won 14 straight National League East titles.

He's also a career .300+ hitter with something 460 bombs. And just think.. that was with all your injury concerns..

You list Mantle only and Chipper is overrated?

I guess it depends what part of the country you're from. I don't think I have encountered anyone in the Midwest that has really 'overrated' Chipper Jones. I've always thought he was an incredibly gifted hitter. The Braves absolutely dominated the NL East in Jones' prime.

I'm not saying that Chipper is not a Hall of Fame type player, but folks in the South act like he is on the same level as Bonds, Ruth, Aaron, Ripken, Williams, etc.

He was overrated at the end of his career, but not during his prime. But that is what happens to most great players. You fall in love with them in their primes so you forgive them for their mistakes (in Chipper's case a lack of hustle or defensive liability) at the end of their careers. He was a great leader for a great team and probably the second best true switch hitter to ever play the game.

ETA: I said second because I consider Rose to be a left handed hitter and not switch even though he has 1,000ish hits I think from the right side.

no they don't.

he's probably the 3rd best switch hitter of all time, so i don't think he is overrated. in fact, he is probably underrated by most people who aren't Braves fans.

HoF shoe-in.

One of the worst days in modern sports history is the day Nomo got ROTY in 95 over Larry Chipper Jones.

468 HRs and a career average of .303. Overrated? Are you fricking kidding me? By the way Ripken hit 431 HRs and .276.

Not overrated. Chipper didn't even become injury prone until his mid 30's, like most non-juicing baseball players do.

Career slash of .303/.401/.529. Was a .300 hitter from BOTH sides of the plate with power. 5 seasons with an OPS above 1.000. Finished with 468 HRs, 1629 RBI and 2726 Hits. He also finished with 103 more walks than strikeouts which is insane for a power hitter. His 1999 MVP season could possibly be the best season by a 3rd baseman in baseball history.

If not for all his injuries in his 30's, he would've been a lock for 550+ HR and 3000 hits and you would look even dumber for making this thread.
