Chip Kelly is going to squander the UCLA opportunity
Posted by Dogfish on 3/18/18 at 8:53 am358
quote:
The biggest takeaway from Kelly's first class at UCLA is that he isn't straying far from the formula that brought him so much success at Oregon. Kelly prefers to exert his energy developing rather than chasing big fish. "We're not concerned with stars, never have been," he said. "We're not driven by that.
Kelly sticks to Oregon blueprint
He should focus on getting elite players to employ his scheme. Gurus always think it's the system
Update: guy questions viability of HUNH with coach who doesn't care about high rated recruits. Gets down voted into oblivion on an SEC website. Ouch

There's nothing wrong with sticking to that blueprint.
He's at a stronger brand, for starters.
But he's comfortable doing it this way and can improve the team really quick. Why WOULDN'T he Oregon the place up for a bit?

No Nike bag man at UCLA too. Look at their recruits during his tenure at Oregon. No Texas kid is going up there without a carrot.

Success will eventually attract some elite guys to going there. It’s not like he’s totally cutting them off no matter what happens.
The opportunity is to get better players. Dan Mullen went to Florida to get better players. All I'm saying is stars matter and he was very dismissive on that topic.
Anyhoo, how about that Tiger Woods?

I meant UCLA is a stronger brand than Oregon.
If they allow him the resources, I think UCLA is a better spot to win than Oregon.

I disagree. That Nike factor is real and allowed Chip and lot of cushion he will never get at UCLA.
Like it or not, Oregon football had a unique identity from its relationship with Nike, while UCLA will always be the second school in town when it comes to football.

It's worked for him in the past, not to mention that the elite players play in the south.

Stop disagreeing with me
Is UCLA really THAT much of a little brother to USC? And now they have an elite head coach while USC has some nerd leading them.

Oregon needs Texas.
Ucla is fine with California recruits.

Every coach says the same thing about "stars." They say they don't care and it's about finding the right players.

UCLA is far and away the bigger brand. Way better university. In a way better location. With a way better athletic tradition.
Oregon's Nike benefactor, Uncle Phil, is 80 years old. Oregon has reached its pinnacle. UCLA has the potential to be much bigger.
