We'll he is getting paid no matter what... If he turns out that last year was his best year then it is a great deal for the Braves. If he turns into a superstar then it sucks for him.
If MLB strikes in two years and misses a season then it is a great deal for him.

It's a horrific deal. No rational reason he should have taken it.

quote:

He gets $1 million in each of the next two seasons, $3 million in 2021, $5 million in 2022 and $7 million each in 2023, '24 and '25. Atlanta has a $7 million option for 2026 with a $4 million buyout, and if that is exercised, the Braves have a $7 million option for 2027 with no buyout.

They're not even paying him a large amount up front.

Whatever the Chris Davis deal is, this is the exact opposite of it.

It’s comically bad. If front offices are going to take heaps of shite for signing bad deals then agents deserve the same for deals like this.

Everyone thought the Jon Singleton deal with the Astros was bad for him. Those same people don’t remember who Jon Singleton is. Let it play out before we say worst deal ever.

Jon Singleton wasnt a guy coming off a 3.8 WAR season and a all star appearance.

I mean, I don't wish it, but he could have a career ending injury tomorrow.

It's a bad deal because of the career he's projected to have. It takes a lot of guessing on both sides to make this deal.

Is it low based on how we, outside of Lester Earl, think his career will go? Yes and his agent should've gotten more. But it isn't set in stone that he'll be a perennial all star.

Angel Berroa was a 2.5 WAR
Bobby Crosby was a 3.3
Eric Hinkske was a 4.0
Ben Grieve was a 2.2
Marty Cordova was a 3.0
Bob Hamlin was a 2.6

So WAR means little for rookies as many flash in the pans have produced. I can list more if you need to

There are very, very few situations where injury ruins careers for position players, particularly 22 year olds.

If this was football or a pitcher or something, there would be reasonable precedent for those concerns.

Even if he’s an average every day player it’s still not great

Don’t get me wrong, I would be pumped as a Braves fan. Albies and Acuna are studs and they’re now locked up long term for super cheap. There should be a ton of economic flexibility from this to make a big move.

-Hinske produced 6.2 WAR his next 7 years
-Berrora was literally league average his rookie season and got worse
-Crosby gave us 4.5 WAR in his last 7 years
-Ben Grieve was worth 5.2 his next 7 years after his rookie season
-Cordova was worth 2.8 in 7 years
-Bob Hamelin was awful

I cant find how much 1 WAR is worth dollar wise from 2018, but 1 WAR was worth around 6 million in 2016. So if we are going by 2016, Albies needs to hit 6 WAR in the next 7 seasons to be worth it, and if we are comparing him to the guys that fell off a cliff after their rookie year, as long as he is as good as 4 of the 6, he will be worth the contract, so yes, if Ozzie Albies is as good as Eric Henske, he is worth his contract.

Then why the bitching? If he exceeds it he will lose money in the short term but will make it back in his next contract when he isn't worth the value. If he bombs then the Braves got a good deal. If they strike he got a good deal

I think the majority of folks think Albies is likely worth far, far more than that.

Who is bitching? I replied to the Jon Singleton contract comment, BTW Ozzie has been worth 48 million according to fangraphs in his first 226 games.

All I am doing is showing that the financials of the game have changed greatly. 4.5 million is the league average for a player, so a guy that could be just league average for 7 years is worth a 5 mil a year average no matter what he does(for the most part).

The real question is what is their opinion of Harpers deal. I think he’s overpaid.
