Can he surpass Pops while Pops is still active? What could Stevens do to be seen as a better coach? He lost a star for the season, is playing a new star not know for his D in Kyrie, and has his team on a huge winning streak while playing top notch D. I dont suggest this puts him ahead of Pops but I do wonder if it would be possible to do under any circumstances while Pop is still active.

Sure. Sean McDermott can pass Belichick too.

ETA - Sean McVay, I'm an idiot.

He is a really good coach but the answer to your question is no.

No.

Kawhi is out btw and the Spurs are playing good basketball with Aldridge and a cliff to number 2.

I agree that there is nothing Stevens can do due to Pops retiring well before he would have the resume. I think it unlikely he ever tops him on most polls but I think he is one of the few active coavhes that have the potential.

You're comparing the hot young thing to arguably the greatest basketball coach of all time. What Pop has been able to do in San Antonio of all places is nothing short of miraculous.

This thread will not go well for you because the premise is ridiculous. You would have been better off asking the real question you're looking for the answer to:

"Is Brad Stevens coaching at the highest level in the NBA?" or "Is Brad Stevens the heir apparent to the Popovich throne?".

Political stances are irrelevant to coaching accumen. Pops and Kerr can spew whatever but they are fantastic coaches. Stevens is also a fantastic coach. I enjoy seeing true coaching greatness...it is under appreciated in a time of stars (in my opinion).

Pops says bad things about Trump so a Trump board can't wait for him to flame out.

Typical

You are mistaken regarding the motive. I dont make a claim that Stevens is better. I dont overlook the obvious "rings" part of the equation. What I want to know is if it is possible. I think not. IF it were to occur, it would have to involve back to back titles as a minimum with a team regarded as inferior...and even then it would require a fair amount more for most to be viewed ahead due to Pops head start

I say this as a guy who thinks Pop is a top 3 sports coach of the last 2 decades....there are only like 4 players i would take in a franchise redraft over Brad Stevens to start my franchise.

Pop has had some legendary fricking teams.....He had the Admiral and Timmy. He had a team with probably 4 or so potential HOFers. Hes amazing.....BUT

My god people dont give Sir Brad enough credit. BUTLER! Consecutive FFs! seconds away from a champ. They had a prepubesant Gordon Heyward for sure...but who else? Sheldon fricking mack? Ronald Nored?

Guy took a joke Celtics squad and made them instantly competitive and now has them on a 13 game winning streak following what may be about as deflating of an injury as a team can experience.

Pop never has a bare cupboard. Oh tim retires? Hello La'MarcGasol'ridge!

Excellent post Hester. You also pose a different interesting question: in a fantasy draft of player and coaches, what is your top 10? Probably should be a different thread

The ONLY argument you MIGHT have is the youth of Brad Stevens. Him being so successful so early might allow him to rack up some unbelievably gaudy numbers if he can stomach coaching until he's 65+.

That though would be well past Pops' retirement. So i think we agree impossible now even if he MIGHT potentially over the totality of his career.
