I know the Cards are doing great this season, but let's take a look where he came from:

- He was 35-40 (<0.500) as the head coach of Texas Tech over 6 seasons.
- Had just 2 winning seasons there.
- His offense was ranked in the Top 10 in only two out of the 6 seasons he was there (not a big deal given Tech's offensive pedigree).

How do the Cardinals look at this record and say this is our next head coach? This resume does not scream NFL head coach to me.

Everyone wanted the next Sean McVay at the time

Most people thought they were insane to hire him. The decision was largely panned at the time.

McVay

And the NFL is shifting towards the college spread, so why not grab a young and energetic coach who happens to be a damn good offensive mind?

Wasn’t his last year at TT Mahomes first year as starter in KC? I think there was some hype around that.

NFL teams will often look way past record when hiring a coach and look at a lot of other factors.

I guess some teams may hire a coach based on potential. I guess they were looking for a young, smart, fresh hire rather than an old retread.

And professional teams look beyond just a coach’s record when interviewing them. They really do interview coaches and not just go through the motions.

They knew how much respect people around the league had for the guy.

The Bidwell’s fired the previous coach
The GM made a list for candidates for the job
The Cardinals requested his agent and USC permission for an interview
He interviewed
He impressed the Bidwell’s
Bidwell’s offered a contract
The sides negotiated
He accepted the job
Had a press conference announcing the hiring

It’s not always the guy who is winning who will make a great coach for an NFL team. Nick Saban and Chip Kelly were great college coaches, but couldn’t do a damn thing in the NFL.

He's widely viewed as a brilliant offensive mind and the idea of pairing him with Kyler Murray was enticing.

He would have absolutely crushed it as the HC at USC if they had been smart enough to fire Helton and let him run the show. It is really, really hard to win at Texas Tech.

No, as nobody here is part of the hiring team for the Cardinals.

That said, he seems to be doing okay…no?

He has always been a great offensive mind. Even before TT. They probably loved the idea of him with Murray.

NFL tends to be more defensive anyways, so maybe they weren’t worried he lost a lot as a HC with bad defenses.

I actually applaud them for not hiring another NFL retread.
