I've been seeing advertisements for Draftkings/Fanduel/etc for years.
All of a sudden I'm starting to see commercials and ads for Caesars, BetMGM, etc. They've got the Caesars Superdome now. Is the incoming competition of Barstool the reason for increased advertisement or is it just a general increase in interest of sports betting?

Additional news: totally missed the headlines that LSU Athletics signed a deal with Caesars Sportsbook to make them the "official sportsbook partner" of LSU.

Well, Caesar’s bought Harrah’s in New Orleans, so I imagine that’s why they are doing more stuff there. In terms of commercials, I think that Vegas casinos see the expansion into online sports books as the biggest opportunity they’ve ever had. I would imagine that, once online gambling is legal in all 50 states, their potential earnings in that space would absolutely dwarf what their brick and mortar casinos make. It’s a race right now to see who can become the most recognizable brand before that happens.

I’m in Michigan where gambling became legal this year. Every fricking commercial and billboard is one of the gambling apps. I think they’re all just trying to flood the market and get loyalty customers like that one year where every commercial was a DFS site.

All that said, they run some nice bonuses. I cashed out 500 bucks from MGM with their free play and no deposit and ran 25 bucks up to 300 on draft kings(although I blew that by continuing to bet)

Also not to play the morality police, but smartphone gambling is such a slippery slope that will ruin lives. I get sports gaming I guess but if you’re playing table games or slots on your phone you have a problem

i think penn really hit it out of the park with the barstool purchase.

other books are spending hundreds of millions on advertising and penn bought barstool to essentially be its advertising dept... and it probably is close to breaking even, if not making money.

Just rebranding it. Caesars and Harrahs are the same company and have been for decades

it's better to gamble with money you already have than be in debt to a bookie, i suppose

I saw an article a few months ago that Fanduel, Draftkings, and MGM have about 80% of the market in Michigan. Barstool was fourth at 7%, but fading after initially doing well. The competition is only going to get more fierce since Caesars bought William Hill and is spending a billion in advertising to take market share. The bottom line is that Barstool probably won't be a major player like the big boys. I understand that Penn Gaming is a big company. I am just saying that they are starting way behind in terms of online gambling recognition.

The online gambling market is currently a land grab. It's a race to get as many people stuck on your platform as possible. Hence the marketing spend by these companies and constant promotions.

Portnoy actually spoke about this on a pod last week. He said that people are going to flip between companies based on the offers made to entice them to gamble. I don't think they figured they were going to be the #1 app or anything. The discussion was centered around their sponsorship of a Jake Paul fight or something and became a larger one about advertising for gambling.

It says online that Barstool Sportsbook is currently available in only 7 states. PA, MI, IN, IL, CO, VA, & NJ.
That's just based on the state's overall laws regarding online betting right?
I'd assume it's the same for others too? Every time barstool sportsbook goes live in a new state, so does BetMGM & Caesars?

I've only ever seen a couple of TV commercials for Barstool's app over the course of the year. Fanduel, Draftkings, BetMGM, Pointsbet, and Caesars are on every day. Barstool's recognition with young dudes probably helps a little bit, but it appears to be not much in the grand scheme of things. That said, if you're the fifth biggest sports betting app in the country, I think that is still probably making decent money.

Every state is probably different. I think Barstool is only in a handful, whereas Fanduel is in about ten. In Michigan, the online apps have to be tied to a physical casino. But, with all of the native American casinos, we ended up with about ten online sites. It's the wild west here.

Yes, but each state's laws are slightly different

Yeah he spoke about how they can't partner with the NFL (for some reason) and how they're trying to do alternative methods of advertising (hence sponsoring the Jake Paul fight). He said to invest in Penn stock but didn't seem like they thought they'd be #1 or anything.

Because they know that once you deposit your money into an account that you are unlikely to make a pain in the arse switch to any other gambling app.

serious question:

What’s more valuable for this space:” free” ads on shows like pardon my take and spittin chiclets, as well as the entire social media network that has millions of followers
Or
Constant tv commercials

I honestly have no idea

Im of the opinion that people that bet money they barely or dont have would just waste the money elsewhere if they couldnt gamble
